Legends21 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I recently purchased a manual steering rack that included the rare late tie rods. The only problem is that I need the early tie rods. Anyone want to work up a trade to swap early tie rods for the late model tie rods? Or if you have early manual tie rods laying around for a good price? (Please send me a PM.) Thanks. Dale Quote
jaje Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I bought a manual steering rack from an '83 944 at the local auto recycler. I am just buying an '89 944 S2 model and want to swap the manual rack on it. I've got the early tie rod ends (they are from a used car but look in good shape) and would be willing to swap for the late ones. Quote
Legends21 Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Jaje: I am following up with a local trade first. I'll contact you if it falls through. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Dale Quote
Tim Comeau Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Guys, Keep in mind that the down link from the column to the rack is a different length between the power and manual racks. Quote
jaje Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Guys,Keep in mind that the down link from the column to the rack is a different length between the power and manual racks. That I do know and have the entire setup for an early car (rack, tie rods & ends and steering int shaft). Ian at 944online sells them seperately for a good price. Quote
Techno Duck Posted February 10, 2007 Posted February 10, 2007 Can either of you that have the manual rack out of the car please check something for me. If you rotate the splined input shaft by hand, does the steering rack feel 'notchy' when it gets to perfectly centered? I believe the rack is centered when this happens, however the alignment notch on the toothed rack does not line up perfectly with the hole on the manual rack i have. This picture shows where i am in the 'notch' and i believe the rack is centered..but as you can see the alignment hole for the special bolt does not line up. I appreciate any help! Quote

I bought the complete rack assembly on ebay from Ian with the correct down link. Dale Quote

The hole is supposed to be the rack center. However any notchy feel could be from wear or some other rack problem. Manual racks clearly don't leak, but still can wear out and this might be what you feel. The manual rack in my race car and my 83 street/parts/autocross car never felt notchy. Quote

Dale Jon: I worked the input shaft of the manual rack on my workbench. I could not detect any major difference in the feel when at center or not. Hope that helps. Dale Quote
