Need AI-style GM pattern RWD wheels

Recommended Posts

ExRacer

Hey people, we have a school-sponsored project and need some wheels. Either a pair of 17x10s or preferably 11s for a rear wheel drive Gen3, or a set of 18x10 fronts and/or 18x11 rears if we can get our big brake sponsor to kick in. A dual pattern center is OK too.

This is an LAUSD-supported Regional Occupational Center project and is tax deductable as that time is coming. You'll be helping some students who would never get the chance to come out to be part of a race team. Style isn't that important, but safety, weight and RWD offsets are.

Thanks for any responses. Please PM anything you have that might meet our needs.

Good luck on that unless they're custom wheels.

You're better off looking for a set of 4th gen wheels and getting the required adapters (think like it's a 2" thick spacer) from Skulte Performance - http://www.skulte.com

That's the most common way to get wide 17" wheels on these cars unless you go to a custom shop like CCW or Forgeline ($$$).

Thanks TJ, I'm on it. Do you have info on the wheel sets that might be usable with the spacers or even if standard Corvette/gen4 F-body wheels are usable?

Thanks for any info. Maybe I should move this to a racecraft thread.

Thanks

Standard 4th gen wheels are definitely usable, that's why the spacers were designed.

If you're just looking to stick a big tire underneath it and aren't concerned about weight, ebay has ZR1 replicas listed all the time in 17x9.5 (front) and 17x11 (rear) staggered setups.

If you haven't checked it out yet, there's FRRAX (F-body Road Race & Autocross): http://www.frrax.com

Enough info to make your head spin if you use the search function. I think there's a stickied thread in the Wheel & Tire section about 17x11 fitment.

Awesome links TJ, I'll send pics when we get things sorted. If you're ever out in the SoCal area (We're @ Fontana next month) look me up.

I run HPDE3 out here. I hadn't seen these sites and have checked out the regular Fbody forums for years. Goes to show how useful the NASA forums can be 'cause of guys like you . . .

Thanks!

No problem. Will do if I ever get out there. Maybe some time in the next few years, my brother is stationed in Monterey right now so maybe one day I'll use the excuse

Now, to maybe bring the project back down to earth a little bit, have you priced tires for those rim sizes? Pretty expensive if you're buying new, and they don't really fit into any affordable NASA pony car classes (CMC or AI). There's nothing wrong with running AIX (or Super Unlimited for that matter), but I hope you have lots of donations

Just something to think about, I'm not sure if by race you meant actually race, or maybe HPDE/TT. It seems to be used pretty interchangeably by a lot of people. I'd stay 17x9.5 all the way around if you end up buying/getting them donated new to stay legal for AI if that's your intent. I know beggars can't be choosers, but it makes sense if you can convince the students that bigger wheels don't necessarily make you faster

Yeah TJ I race Performance Touring and won SoCal Championship and the National Performance Touring D Championship. No big sponsors but am ready to make my machine work with a new ZZ4 engine and Currie rear end.

I'm ready to buy the RA1s or even Kumho 710s to make this 'Bird launch!

Hey thanks for the encouragement.
