Barfly
I have a GPS laptiming system, but since I run in TT I need to get an AMB transponder. Do most of you guys continue to rent or do you purchase your own? If you purchase, which unit do you get (e.g. transx260)? Do we have to pay a smaller fee if we have our own transponder, or is it free? Thanks guys.
Thom_S
I bought the Tran X 260 direct powered one. I didn't feel like worrying if mine was charged or not.

I didn't feel like worrying if mine was charged or not. thx. i'll probably go that route. after the purchase, there aren't any other hidden costs that NASA charges to do your timing? i know some track organizers that will charge you half the rate if you have your own. Mr PS
Hey Barfly, from west LA as well. lol! If you attend more than 10 events, I think it pays to get a transponder. NASA doesn't charge if you provide your own. I have the rechargeable type. If you get the direct-power one, make sure it is mounted in a less conspicuous location. A place where I'd recommend not even jacking up the car will get to it. I had one mounted in the wheel well and it was stolen (cut off from the wiring that is). RACER-X
Where do you purchase them at? I too am looking to purchase one. What about the frequencies, how do you know which one to get? or are they adjustable?
cosm3os
I just got one (260) from apexperformance.net. Not the best price, but I like their customer service. If you find one new for less than $300, buy it.
1LapSRT
Where do you purchase them at? I too am looking to purchase one. What about the frequencies, how do you know which one to get? or are they adjustable? Check e-bay. I got my there and it works perfect. Only problem with a used one is that MyLaps.com will not erase old data from the previous owner, even with their permission. Mine used to belong to a circle track driver in the midwest, so it's easy enough to differentiate who ran what tracks...
kbrew8991
I'm a fan of the rechargable.... no wiring to go faulty and cause occasional missed hits, or that kind of crap otherwise, just make sure its an AMB 260 and it will work, I promise don't forget to memorize or write down your transponder number (and keep it with you) so your T&S people don't flip out at you. I've got mine programmed into my cell phone for easy lookup - Ken, former T&S Chief

rrrracer
I had one mounted in the wheel well and it was stolen (cut off from the wiring that is). I wonder if you could track it (pun intended hehe) through the people at MyLaps.com if whoever stole it ran someplace where the sanctioning body turned in results?? kbrew8991
when I was T&S Chief I'd get emails from AMB on occasion to be on the lookout for stolen transponder numbers

Mr PS
when I was T&S Chief I'd get emails from AMB on occasion to be on the lookout for stolen transponder numbers T&S as in time and scoring? Being the geek I am...have you ever come across two EXACT lap times in the same session either by the same driver or not? Asking for the sake of it... kbrew8991
Yes and No respectively but I only did the job for about 18 months, then got moved to TT CoDirector. There are people around that have done the job for decades

kbrew8991
Write it in your logbook if you have one, otherwise a sharpie and under the hood someplace. another good idea I've had to resist the urge many times to hit racers with whatever blunt object was nearby when I got a blank stare after asking "whats your transponder #?" when they came up to the tower to complain that they weren't included in the results...
