944-spec rules at Nationals

I know National rules take over for this type of event but I have 2 questions for the Spec drivers / Directors.

1. I will be going to Nationals does that make me the series director for the event ? Does anyone else want it ?

2. Here in Rocky Mountain region We share the spoils of War ! We split all of the winnings. I feel this promotes the class to new drivers, Keeps costs down, no bickering over how spec someone elses car is, just keeps us Happy !

For the 944-spec Drivers going to Nationals ... Do You want to do that ?

My vote is winner gets all of the good pictures / press but we split the Prizes. It's the "944-spec" way.

This could be a gentlemen's agreement so I don't want to talk about We can't do that. ie. I win and I send poor Eric a tire or 2. Eric wins I come in last He sends me a tire or 2...

Wadda ya think ?

NASA has asked me to be the series Director for Nationals for 944 Challenge, but if you are interested in taking over the duties for the Spec class, be glad to relinquish. That decision is really made by NASA officials though. Suggest contacting Competition Director Bryan Cohn about the Spec duities if interested.

Dave, are you also in charge of the Midwest spec class, or the Cup/Supercup class alone?

Just Cup/SC for MidWest. However, when I recenlty sent in the points for Cup drivers from the Iowa races, I also gave them the points for you for spec so u could get in the standings. Noticed they were missing.

Interested in wearing 2 hats. The Cup Director job is open. That would almost assure u racing for free (entry fee that is) each weekend, Nationals not included.

Dave, yes, I would be interested, but I'd like to know more about the responsabilities and specifcs. Do I go through the NASA midwest people or you?

Chuck and Eric,

I would be happy to help you guys with respect to 944 spec operations at both midwest and at Nationals. I doubt I will make it to nationals, but I can be contacted at any time.

Eric,

I will work on making sure the 944 spec points for the midwest region at listed on the 944-spec website. I believe the season schedule is there already.

Thanks Joe !

I think NASARM will need MAM to count on Our schedule to make sure We have enough 5 cars races to get the BIG $. We might not need it ...

Ditto. Thanks for helping get these fledgling programs off the ground! Chuck, what BIG $ - Toyo, or is their another? Any chance we can coordinate some national title sponsors? I know Paragon http://www.paragon-products.com has a spec suspension package that they discount for anyone building a spec car (thanks to the efforts of our West Coast compatriots), anyone have any other leads?

piston check (visual for 9.5:1 or 10.2:1) then measurements for head shave.

There is a spec in the manual and also a check point for head thickness. this can be done with the head on the car.

The resulting max shaves for 10.5:1 compression are as follows.

10.2:1 pistons

.010" or .27 mm less than min allowed

9.5:1 Pistons

.038" or .98 mm less than min allowed in manual.

I'd have to look up the manual for the exact stock min number, but it also show where to take the measurment.

I'm thinking NASA tech inspectors at Nationals will not be able to discern the difference between pistons on a visual check based on current knowledge. Joe or Tim -- can u provide NASA with the needed specs, pix, etc., need to do this examine at Nationals. Thanks.

Also, what's the accepted practice for checking torsion bar sizes at the track?

I don't have pictures of 10.2:1 pistons, but I do of 9.5:1 pistons.

As for t-bars. 330lbs-in is about right for 30 mm t-bars.Using scales and a tape measure you can jack the car measure the spring deflection similar to what I do when swapping t-bars.

Good topic - probabably deserves it's own thread. I have been in discussions with DD on becoming the Midwest Spec & Cup director, and one of my concerns with accepting this is being able to check compliance when needed. I do not have the mechanical background that some of the other series directors have. While I enjoy working on my car, this at a hobby, not professional, level. For example, I have not had the motor apart to know what my 10.2 pistons look like. My sponsor has volunteered to help in this regard, but having a FAQ on common ways to check spec compliance (and Cup compliance) would be very helpful.

In addition to the compression procedures, can you or Tim please also provide NASA competition Director detailed procedures, diagrams, pix, and specs for the torsion compliance check. Can u do the same for determing that a stock chip is being used. Thanks.

Without detailed procedures being provided for compliance testing, the checks will not be possible at Nationals. I'm in the process of preparing the Impound Document for the 944 Challenge for Nationals, and need to be sure we have a precise manner for checking complaince with the rules.

I will work with Tim and other directors to develop something. Something we need anyway as our class grows beyond our local areas.

I have the tech sheet / impound request from Bryan for 944-spec. Unless you are talking about 944-spec within 944-Cup . I will be helping with Tech at nationals And with so few cars in 944-spec it will be easy for me to check each one. 3 of the 5 cars were built by Me .... Now as for who is checking Me ????
