Sterling Doc Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 ... of the car. After having a weekend of cars (not Porsches) blow up around me, and oil consumption of about 1/2 quart per 20" session, I decided it's time to freshen the head (bottom end's been done). I found that if you take off the PS & AC pulleys on the front of the motor, it can be pulled from above and not dropped- just clears hood latch this way. I'm going to leave the PS pulley off anyway (PS system out of the car). Compression & leakdown tests are OK, likely just needs valve guides and valve & cam cover gaskets to fix the leaks. Off to the machine shop. We took a look at the clutch, and amazingly, it still has the stock rubber-center clutch after 20 years and 120,000 miles - you were right Chuck! It's amazing it survived 1.5 years of racing at this age. It is pretty worn out. Note to those building cars - if you can, check the clutches - those old rubber center cluches are still out there! I also found a bunch of very tired looking hoses under the intake manifold. Should be fresh for MAM - see you guys there! Quote
Chuck T. Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 Sounds GREAT ! are you going to shave the head a little or just kind of plane it to make it straight ? It seems you could shave some to bring the compression ratio up to the max the rules allow but I don't know if there is any power to be had that way ... MAM is going to be FUN ! Quote

How much can I take off? Just going from 10.2 to 10.5, prob should be able to use 93 octane still. I'll think about it. Quote

If you have 88 spec pistons I'd just make it flat. You can easily get to 10.5, but that is just one more thing that could cause problems. Plus running pump gas is a nice cost saver. I am not really sure where the cut off between pump gas (even 93) is with respect to compression. Quote

944-Spec#94 Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I have found paragon's prices to be quite good. $1500 for all the normal replacment interals with a clutch is what I would expect. Quote
Chuck T. Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 I have started using DARTAUTO.com . Dave is the title sponsor here for 944-spec and might become a NATIONAL Sponsor for 944-spec or 944 Challenge ! So give him a call and tell him what you need and the other dealers price ... AND of course make sure you tell him you are a 944-spec racer. If He can get our business He will sponsor Us ! http://www.dartauto.com/ Quote
