EOIC = rotate the engine and set the intake when the exhaust valve on that cylinder just starts to open, then set the exhaust when the intake goes past max lift and is about 2/3s of the way closed. This procedure works on any engine. With a solid cam, use a feeler gauge to set lash, tighten the set screw in the locknut and give both a extra 1/8 turn to lock them together, then recheck clearance. Lash increases when the engine is hot, so set it cold a couple thou below the target, check it hot and adjust as necessary to hit your desired hot lash. Or just run the valves when the engine is hot once you learn to do it quickly.

E.... Or just run the valves when the engine is hot ....

Run the valves?

Good advice on the rest...just confused on the last part.

Run the valves = slang for adjusting the valves. Get the engine up to operating temperature, pull the valve covers, and "run" through the adjustment procedure before it cools off. After you've done this a few hundred times, you should be able to go through all 16 in a few minutes with a bump starter.

got the bump start at the fire wall. about the 150 times i might need to have a back brace for that.

my problem was that i would start on #1 and work my way up #2 #3 etc. and when i was finished, i would come back to check #1 and lets say the intake was good but the exhaust would be way off ( didn't check how much off , but wasn't what i had set it at). a guy who knew what he was doing checked them all and found one that needed alittle adjustment. even though it wasn't what i would have thought it would be. the motor had minimal heat on it to begin with and when finished it had around 90 deg. when finished.

may question i guess would be is that when i start should i go in the firing order and may be start at top dead center, ect. is there a short cut to make it easier or faster or better. that i want a short cut, but i want to do it correctly from the get go.

the last question is how critical is it to get "perfectly" lined up with the spark line; or is it possible.
