Interesting enough, you will find approx 7 to 10 lbs of weight savings in the front window, from glass to lexan, if I remember correctly on my car. The rear is only 5 to 7 lbs. The side rear windows only 1 to 2 lbs each.

The biggest thing about going to lexan is safety, I believe, as Lexan is something like 300 times stronger / resistant to impacts.

wow...thats all? 20 lbs from going lexan? I could lose that on a diet and keep the glass. hm

20lbs here... 20lbs there.... do it 10 times and you just shaved off 200lbs.

Are you sure about those numbers?

7 lbs when I look at this rear window I would assume it weighs at least 50lbs.

No... it is surprising, I know. The rear window is maybe 15lbs or so, and the front windshield is maybe 22 to 25 lbs. The 3/16 lexan front windshield you replace it with is approx 9 to 10 lbs, maybe a little more, I cant remember exactly.

The Lexan windshield returns more weight then you would think as it has to retain a certain amount of safety, but the side and rear windows can be thinner. Am I wrong?

The side windows are VERY light. I have 3 sets in my garage right now. The only reason I'm putting lexan back in their place is for air vents.

Nah, the rear glass is pretty light. 1 person can EASILY grab it and pick it up. I'd say no more than 20lbs. I guess I should have weighted it before tossing it. (oh and for anyone wondering, the rear glass IS NOT safety glass. So if you plan on breaking it to get rid of it, prepare to clean up a big fucking mess )

What are some of the sources for SN95 lexan windows?

Percy glass is where I got mine. I recommend getting the thicker stuff. 3/16 is just too light and flimsy. I used window braces from White star bodies. Worked pretty slick. The car will be at Grattan along with the other car I built with the same glass if anyone wants to see it. Mine is #37 the other is #08

Two years ago I transformed my American Grand Sport car, to an AI car. Maximum Motorsports front end suspension

Aluminum heads

Carbon bumper cover

Fiberglass fenders

Carbon hood

Lexan windshield

Lightweight clutch

Aluminum drive shaft

Lots of little stuff. Holes in things, shorter bolts, etc.

The car went from 3417 wet to 3058 wet. I actually added roll cage to the car as well.

It all adds up, er subtracts.

I'm in the process of adding a carbon bumper cover and when all is said and done I should be in the 2990 range with my fat a** and about half a tank.

So what was weight savings from fiberglass fenders??

I still just can't imagine the rear saves that little. The guy at Percy glass said nearly 20lbs and overall for all glass is like a 70lbs savings.

He was probably quoting weight reduction with side windows and 1/8" lexan.

Anyway, fire up the sawzall and welder instead of the Visa.

My 3rd gen Firebird is down to 3020 with me, safety gear, iron heads, and full 15 gallon cell and there's still ways to remove 100+lbs without going too overboard. The only weight reduction I bought was a fiberglass hood. Now, I know Fox bodies are way easier to make lighter, not sure about New Edge bodies but I can't imagine them being too much harder.

AI rules are pretty wide open on weight reduction, you just have to start imagining.

Thank god I have too much torque to have to get radical like that. I dyno'd at 340 ft lbs torque on a humid 90 degree Savannah, GA day.

That means I can be no lighter than 3060 and on a cooler day I would imagine I've got more torque there on the dyno.

3600 lbs is with an unnecessary 22 gallons in the fuel cell. I believe that is 183 lbs. 3400 lbs. Subtract 200 lbs for the recently removed passenger seat/bracket, carpet, insulation, door guts and glass. 3200 lbs.

Cobra R wheels out (25lbs), CCW Classics in (18.6lbs) equals 21 lbs less.

3179. Driver has lost 10lbs since that weigh in. 3169.

If the car dynos at 350 ft lbs torque on a cooler day or a different dyno or I do anything to make the engine happier and thats 3150.

No fiberglass body work for me beyond the hood that is already there.

I used Pro Glass molded 3/16th front and after driving it once, I took it out, too wavy! They refunded my $395 and wouldn't send another piece, said that's good as it gets. Like Andy said, not much weight savings in glass anymore, however I like glass for the better view. I used molded 1/8" rear and sides w/vents. Car weighs 2710 w/half tank.

Ryan,

Will you make BW this weekend?

Got any of those side windows for sale? I could use the NACA ducts.

thanks,

Hey Peder!

I won't have my new shifter done in time. I'm really hoping for Infineon at this point. Make sure you tech Andy real good...

I do not have the side windows in lexan yet, I meant I had 3 sets of glass ones. They are pretty flat so all you need to do is get a piece of lexan and cut out the openings for the NACA ducts and a few more holes for bolts.

Technically it wasn't mine. It was borrowed from the old 42 car and Guy promised it to someone else. It was good while it lasted (sort of).
