Apex SPG.com
I have to say I was very impressed with the car Tim delivered to Billy Newport. As luck would have it I was assigned to instruct Billy this weekend and as a result had an opportunity to spend a great deal of time in Tim's new creation. I have built or paid to have built 3 different 944 race cars since the late 1980's. Based on my previous experience, I was very impressed with the build quality of #7. When I take a new car to the track I expect to spend a weekend or two debugging the new car. In the case of #7 I saw very little that needed attention. As someone who has just about completed my 944 spec car I have 164 hours in the car and it still does not look as nice as #7. Congratulations to both Tim & Billy. 944 spec keeps growing in the Midwest! Jim Bryant Apex SPG.com
Spec944#74
I've seen several of the cars that Tim has built and the build quality on all of them has been outstanding. Makes me wish my old track rat was a little prettier! I'm going to be at Brainerd in August for the club race and I'm hoping Billy will have his car there so I can check it out. I wasn't up for hauling my race car all the way to MN from AZ but I will be doing DE in an 87 944S that my brother and I have set up for the track. I have done one or two PCA DE's at Brainerd for the last three years and it's wonderful to go up there when it's been 110 degrees in Phoenix for 40 or 50 days in a row. Nordstern runs a great DE program, both in the quality of instruction and the organization and management of the event and it's alway fun, safe and entertaining. If Billy or any other 944 guys are up there, please look for a black 944S, #182 and stop by and say hello.
Apex SPG.com
Steve, You should have a great group of SP1 guys to run with at Brainerd. Mark Repka (from Appleton, WI) Max Currie (Mpls) Chris Dvorak (Mpls) Chuck Porter (Mpls) & myself (Mpls) all are planning to bring SP1 cars to Brainerd for the club race with PCA. The above total 5 SP1 cars. I did not ask Billy if he was coming up because he was too busy smilling about his new car. Expecting Billing to attend would make the count 6 SP1 cars. In case anyone else is looking for a great racing experience, Brainerd is a 3 mile, 10 turn track that boasts a high bank turn 1 which allows 944's to reach 130+ MPH. Although Road America is longer, Brainerd is generally faster for most 944 drivers. In addition to the track, Brainerd is located in a wonderful resort community including fine restaurants, golf, boating and fishing. Bring the family an make a great vacation out of the event (Erick Kuhns are you listening?) By the way, I do not work for the MN dept of tourism. By the way, I do not work for the MN dept of tourism. Jim I am, and would like to do that, but it's the same weekend as NASA's Road America weekend (Aug 3-5th), I believe. If I'm wrong, let me know, and I'll work on getting up there. In any case good job building the spec cars #'s - it's impressive, and looks like a whole lot of fun. One of these days, I'll see how I match up. I just renewed my PCA membership. Back on topic, congrads on the car, Billy! Eric

Are all of you racing or are some of you doing DE? I would really like to race one of these years but unless I haul my spec car all the way out from Arizona it's not going to happen because we would have to prep our 944S as an SP3. Either way I look forward to meeting the SP1 guys. See you in August!

You could race the 944S in NASA's 944 Challenge under the 944 Cup rules - should be competitive. Or you could have my sponsor build you a spec car for out here: http://www.VFC-engineering.com

Max Currie and possibly Billy Newport will be in DE. Sterling, We really have to get this schedule worked out! Think how much fun we could have if we got all the SP1 car together at the same race. I have an alternative for you to consider. Come to Road America on July 16 and 17 for the PCA DE. Then play golf on Wednesday. Thursday (the 19th) and the morning of Friday (the 20th) watch the million dollar vintage guys at Road America. Friday afternoon we drive down to Joliet for the NASA race July 21 and 22. What better motorsports week could we have? I will commit if you will.

I have a competition license with NASA and that's who I have run all of my races with, but there are virtually no cars running 944 Challenge out here except for the spec 944 cars. Tim Comeau
Hey all, Just catching up on the forum some more. Thanks a million for the kind words. I try hard to deliver the kind of car I would want for myself. Funny thing is, my personal car still hasn't had all the attention it deserves! You know, the cobbler's kids never have nice shoes.... Thanks again. Let's keep building this class and making it better.
bnewport
I'll do a DE for the BIR club race and I'm going to Road America mid July with Jim also. I need to get some cage work done to get a log book before I can race and thats unlikely to happen before Road America but because of money/time at the cage builder etc. I'm planning on doing PCA and possibly NASA sp1 racing also once I got a log book etc.

Let me make sure I can get the time off. Since this is a DE, do I need to apply for a PCA competition license? I can do this, but I ony have a provisional/rookie license through NASA as of yet, and I'm not sure this will get me in the PCA's door. Can you bring a few of your SP1 buddies down with us? If we get 4-5 cars, I'll split the Toyo bucks equally to make it worth the trip! I agree it would be great to get us all together!
