roberth944 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 which is better, weld in or bolt in? Are they both legal? I know they must be 6 point. I have a fabricator friend who is in contact with John Lindsey as to what is required for NASA. I just would like a little feed back as we have 3 944 spec cars being built right now and we are ready to do the cages. What are fair prices for these? Thanks. Quote
Chuck T. Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Weld in ! Do it right the first time . Where are you located ? Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Weld in cages (roll bars as stated in the post topic are just the rear hoop and not legal) are better for many reasons. Most of the time this comes to more interior space due to being able to put he bars close to the body. Many people also feel a well built custom cage is safter than a from the box bolt in. In the end you need a cage that meets the rules as shown in the NASA CCR's. I would also check PCA, SCCA & POC rules to ensure it will me those orgs too as if you weld in cage and ever sell the car it is nice for it to be legal in all of these places. In then end you must make the choice based on time, budget and safety concerns. I have weld in cage and love it because of the interior space and distance my body is to the bars. It is not as fancy as some custom jobs, but I feel what is there is very very well done. I can also add to the cage over time as choose to. I do however think that in the long run it is cheaper to just get what you want right away. Quote
Tim Comeau Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Robert, I hope you guys got some good track time and some great feedback from NASA's awesome HPDE program. Are you talking roll bar or roll cage? If bar, I'd go with a bolt in. It's cheaper and you can do it yourself in a day. When you're ready for a full cage, unbolt the roll bar and sell it off to help absorb the cost of the new cage. If you're talking cage, I'd get a custom welded in one. LOTS of communication between you and the builder. I'd provide a printed set of the current NASA rules to the builder as well. Quote
