what does the ccr or your series rules book say?

pdf search is your friend.

Most series that I know of do require the steering wheel lock to be removed.

Yes, it needs to be removed. It's easy on the 924S and early 944... just pull it out and use a Dremel to cut the "pin" off and grind it down a little so that nothing will catch in the steering shaft. If it's a late 944, I believe it's more difficult to get the ignition switch out, but I don't know the procedure off the top of my head.

Actually, according to section 14.8 of the 944-Spec rules, "...the steering lock may be removed..." which is different from the mandatory removal requirement for the Cup series (section 8.2.3.)

This is where it gets a little confusing... the 944 rules say "may", but the CCR says "shall"...

15.9 Steering Wheel Lock

The steering wheel locks shall be removed except where authorized by class rules or by

exception from the Race Director.

My interpretation is that the "may" in the class rules only authorizes removal of the lock, not non-removal as an exception to the CCR, but it's really not clear.

In the CCR's the last sentence of section 1.0 states:

All competition class rules and local

supplemental rules supersede the CCR whenever there is a conflict.

Therefore if our Class rules specify MAY they superscede the CCR's stating SHALL.

Or at least that is how I read it.

This is correct. So 944-spec MAY remove it not required.

Excellent work, Chuck and Jerry.

I love the way our forum is both informative and self-correcting. Thanks for serving the class, Guys!

GOOD ON YOU!
