New To NASA

i had a couple questions. I just became a member of NASA. I'd like to start racing my car in HDPE, but I wanted to first go to some of the events and help out first to learn how things are done. The closest one to me is Pocono Raceway. I see an event is comin up in the end of july. I was wondering how I go about helping at the event. Is there some sort of form i must fill out? also how do i go about getting a liscence? any info would be great help thanx.

1) Welcome!

2) HPDE is not racing. Lap times, results, and trophies don't exist. There are no competitors, just education and car control improvement that just happens to take place on a racetrack.

3) Contact the officials in charge of the region holding any event for details about signing up to work, although I might recommend just coming out to watch and talk to people first.

4) To get a racing license, you would need to graduate through the HPDE program first. In mid-atlantic at least, here's the progression:

Once you get to HPDE3 and gain some experience passing in corners there, you can either:

-attend a competition licensing school (using a race car)

-attend an instructor clinic (using a street car or race car)

-get a Time Trial license (using a street car or race car)

Hope it helps,

ok cool thanx man. the time trials is what i think id do. on time trials is it just one car on the course at a time, or is it multiple cars racing side by side? I'd prefer either running alone or with few enough cars that theres barely any chance off accidents.

In TT you'll be running with about 20 other cars at a time; open passing.

is there any event that runs with lesser cars? like 5-10 so they're more spread apart?

One Lap of America

Test and Tune days (comp license required)

Unless you spend nearly $400+ per day, you are not going to get to be on track with that few cars. The event needs to atleast break even and to do so requires a decent sized entry list. There are private tuning days with less than 10 cars total, but it is much more expensive.

If you are not willing to risk damage to your car, dont take it out on track....or out of your driveway for that matter.

20-30 sounds like alot, until they're spread out over a few miles of track

You'll be fine in HPDE

Like our 60-70 car fields !

It's multiple cars at a time - as many as 40-50 depending upon the length of the track, competing for the lowest lap time in each of the different car classes (again it's not "racing" though... gotta be careful with that word.)

As Renntag said, events like the ones you're talking about are not only few and far between, they're also prohibitively expensive and they're rarely open to anyone short of a licensed racer (occasionally some are open to instructors and/or advanced level drivers, but to get to that point you've still gotta attend many instructed HPDE's with many other cars on track with you.)

And there is barely a chance of accidents in HPDE - at least multiple car ones, it's extremely rare. At least 99% of the incidents are single car offs due to driver error and/or mechanical issues.

+1 to what kbrew said; you'd be fine in HPDE. C'mon out to one and see for yourself; many many thousands of drivers have been through our program and had a safe, fast, fun time

I would rather drive on a track with 30 cars than on the hi-way with people on cell phones, girls putting on make-up, guys shaving on the way to work, the track is very safe.

By the way, nice car!

I used to own a '99 Subie 2.5RS. I would've kept it if it wasn't an automatic. Still, I miss it.

thanx man, its getting a ej205 swap in a couple weeks. perrin up/downpipe borla hush cat back, larger tmic, utec delta, jdm koyo rad with metal fan shroud, jdm v2 sti trans, spec stage 1 clutch act streetlite flywheel. should run pretty decent when its all together. next step is a vf34 and sti pinks and tuned by top speed down in GA, followed next year by cusco zero 2r coilovers. then it should definitly compete pretty well.

No mention of the two most important mods for track: brakes and tires.

I'd recommend HPDE'ing the car as stock as possible first; it will make you a better driver in the long run.
