Sterling Doc Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 We got the motor together over the weekend, but there is so much oil pressure that you can see the filter physically expand until the oil filter seal blows out. Even cranking the motor pegs the gauge. We've got a new oil pressure relief valve on the way, but are there any other potential causes? MAM is only 4 days away, and we need to prepare for all the possibilities. Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 That happened to me when I had the Oil pressure relief valve mis aligned. I had to take off the cover and re install it being VERY careful to get it lined up right when I bolted the cover with oil cooler back on. I did not damage the OPRV. Also if it is 1 pice valve that it is the right valve and if it is early "replacement valve" there is the required sleeve in the block. Fig A: Replacement OPRV - Used as the factory retofit for 3 piece valves Fig B: New OPRV used in the factory builds. Produciton Transition was during 87 model year. Most 86's should be the early 3 piece or replacement (fig A) style, Most 88's should be the new style (Fig b). Model year 87 engines are mix. If you still have the old 3 piece valve you can still update to the replacement valve (Fig A) if you choose, but I have been told that if the 3 piece is still working after all these years I probably won't fail. I believe most of the failures were on newish OPRV valves. BTW... thers is also a 3rd 1 piece valve. This was replace due to corrision issues on it and was only in production for a couple months. Just an FYI if you start scanning parts books. Note... the OPRV is same if you use the 951 oil cooler plate and not the stock oil cooler. Quote
Tim Comeau Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Wow! Joe, that was a $hit hot comprehensive, helpful response. Great job of serving the class! Let's keep 'em running reliably and racing with EQUAL POWER! Quote
Sterling Doc Posted June 26, 2007 Author Posted June 26, 2007 Wow, thanks, Joe. I looked at the drift/alignment tool that was sent to me, and it's for an pre-'87 car, mines' an '88. The drift for that year is not listed. Any tips on how to get it aligned better? I have the late valve. Quote

One other Idea and messed mine up this way . You need to make sure the correct size O ring is used. I put one in that was too big and it got torn during install. Quote
Sterling Doc Posted June 26, 2007 Author Posted June 26, 2007 Update Thanks to Joe we've likely got this fgured out. We were sent the early alignment tool, which does not fit tightly, and likely caused mis-alingment of the OPRV. The vendor seems singulalry unhelpful about adressing this, suggesting that I gave him the wrong year car (though the rest of the $1,500 order was right). I will now a have a new $300 OPRV on the car that I likely didn't need. Let me say this was *NOT* DART Auto, but I will be using them in the future, both because of their good customer service, and now their support to the series. My personal sponsor, VFC, came through again and has secured the correct tool overnight, so it looks like we'll be at MAM. Quote
