Lexan Windshield Thickness?

Recommended Posts

I have done a search and can't come up with a clear answer.....

I know AI requires 3/16, but there is nothing in the CCR (that I found) that specifies the minimum thickness. I read in the ASC rules that it can be 1/8. Is there a minimum or does it vary per class?

The consensus is that 3/16" on the front windshield is sufficient. I do not believe that there is a requirement for any particular thickness on the rear window.

does he plan on going in reverse at speed?

Does anyone every really plan to

Well shucks . I was hoping to get away with my 1/8 inch stuff since the Late Model Stock Car guys can run it.

I guess about as often as they plan to be upside down.

I have found that there are far more stringent safety regulations in road racing then in drag and oval. Is it a gene-pool preservation thing maybe?

Yeah, that may be true..but there are some questionable rules on the road race side that as a oval track guy, I question.

By all means, question them in public. Maybe we can learn a thing or two!! It may be that nobody on this end actually thought about it/had experience w/ it. Nobody can know everything.

For one, no oval track car would EVER have the seat bolted to the floor pan, it is required to be bolted to the cage.

No oval track car (in a true race class, not stock bomber type cars) require a fuel cell, not the stock tank.

Don't get me started on the whole door bar debate either.

That I agree with 100%.

I did not like having to attach my seat solely to the floor. I reinforced my floor heavily to ensure I never eject out the bottom or separate in anyway.

Ok, it's not like we are not allowed to bolt the belts to the cage, or not allowed to run a fuel cell (is CMC?). My belts were never bolted to the floor pan.

What's your beef w/ door bars? You want just an X?

lets compare apples to apples here.

If the seat drops out the floor even partially, the attachment method of the belts is irrelevant. That is my concern.

It is not possible to attach the in board lap belts or the sub to the cage. My outboard belts and shoulders are wrapped around the cage tubing. As I mentioned about my reinforced floor above, my inboard belts are attached to a much stronger floor. I dont like it, but it is what it is.

CMC is allowed to run a fuel cell. Most of us dont however.

Oh, I missed the seat part. Hum. Not sure I follow what the problem is. The way my seat is mounted I don't see what problem I could have. If something goes so wrong that the floor pan is ripped apart (the floor pan where the seat attaches is tied into the subframe of the car and cage) I'm guessing nothing is really going to save me. I've been in my share of wrecks and the seat hasn't moved.

I remember not long ago a fellow racer died in a horrible crash where his seat ejected through the floor thus eliminating any protection built into the car.

Granted the cage is welded to the subframe and the connector is under the seat....but it sure would make me feel better if my seat was an integral part of the cage and not the pan. Sheet metal tears and more easily goes into failure. I have yet to see a cage shred like sheet metal.

I am not talking about what you CANT do, I am just surprised at what you CAN. Running 150 MPH+ down a straightaway at a race track with nothing but two door bars protecting you from a side impact seems very strange when you can have 4+ NASCAR style door bars that are not allowed because they are made with ERW and not DOM. My new car, BTW has DOM.

If you bolt your seat to the floor pan and in an accident your cage starts to move, and your seat doesn't move with it...guess what happens to you?

These are EXTREMELY rare chances, but with my life, I don't want to take them.

This is NASA's game and if I wanna play in their game, I have to play by their rules. I was just curious as to why one car can have 1/8 lexan, not to mention, the fastest car at VIR last February, but others must have 3/16.
