Do I need a dash ??

I posted this question with our regional guys too...

I finally got to see the 924s I bought (it's 280 miles away at the cage builders) and the dash was removed by the previous owner to be ready for the cage. It looks like a big mess to me, and I'm wondering why I would want to put it back in at all. 16.2.2 in the spec944 rules reads that only the factory gauge cluster has to remain intact. I'm inclined to fabricate something simple to hold the cluster and the headlight switch, and get the rest of the heating and AC stuff out of there. What am I missing ? Do you guys have dashes ?

Unrelated question. For distant future plans, where do I find a diff and how much will I have to spend (parts only) ? Thanks

Cullen You can race in 944-spec with just the instrument cluster .

But why ? My car is at 2600 lbs with a half a tank of gas . The dash from your car is maybe 6 lbs ? So it's not a weight savings problem. On the late cars like Dirks's the dash weighs a bunch more thats why he is running just a cluster.

Have you seen my cars dash ? If not I will send you some pics it looks Great ! and we do want the cars to look Great ! so i would say after you get everything else done then take a look at reinstalling the stock dash vs fabing up something else.

I agree with Chuck,

I use a full dash to create a more finished look although not requred by the rules. A long time ago I had a 1/2 dash. It worked, but looked like crap. There are in fact many ways to keep the dash, but minimize weight.

Not trying to hijack the thread but...

I was trying to get the dash module out but it wouldn't come the other day because the quick release wheel hub is in the way. Any way to get it out besides pulling the dash or remove the hub?

Billy,

The gauge pod on the late cars should come out over the quick release hub. You might have to bend the dash top a little. It will give.

As far as keeping the dash intact goes......I strongly believe that the stock full dash looks the best, which makes the class look the best. I've seen cut dashes before and they ALL look like hell. The dash isn't that heavy. You can remove the A/C, heating stuff, then reinstall the dash. I don't have anything left behind the dash, but I kept all the trim pieces and my cars look great! (Or so I'm told!)

Thanks guys, I guess when I get the car home, I'll just sift through the pile of screws and fasteners and figure it out. I will probably have a similar issue with the quick release hub, getting the dash back in, as the previous owner installed a MOMO set-up. Fortunately the Gauge pod and headlight switch are duct-taped in place (without the dash) so I can drive it back to N.M.

If you can, please post some dash photo's (924s especially)

The 924S dash is exactly the same as the Early 944 dash. There are lots of pics online, but here are some to help you out...

Rick, you rock !! The exploded view is exactly what I need. Thank you

Cool! FYI, Pelican Parts has all these views online. They are definitely worth a look and have helped me out a couple of times already. They have the static pictures (like what I linked too) and a new interactive one that lets you click on a part in the pic and it shows you the part in a list with part number and cost. Pretty slick.

I'm missing a few things for sure, and what I've got is pretty weather beaten. I'm not sure how to treat the cluster above the center console (oil pressure, fan switch, clock) since I don't have any of the console that supports it.

The plywood er, I mean carbon fiber panel for the main gauge cluster and the light switches is starting to make sense again.

Please post up pics of your race dashes guys. Thanks

Here is my early dash.

It is actually a replacment from my 924S parts car.

You can see where I placed my oil pressure & oil temp gauges as well as where I mounted my switch panel.

One nice thing about Early Dashes is that you can move the tach to the center hole.

Gives great visibility.

Here is shot of the stock oil pressure gauge and my added in oil temp gauge mounted in the mono speaker cover area.

Thanks Joe. The guy I bought mine from already did the tach swap and swivel. I'll have to improvise on the oil and temp gauges, as I just have a hole and no speaker grill to use. I need to find a shifter boot also. Anybody else got pics ??
