cmchopeful
I am thinking of getting the Ground Control coil-over kit. It can be ordered with different springs rates. What spring rates would be recommended? Shock recommendations also welcome. Car is a bone stock 2000 Camaro Z28. No changes except brake pads, fluid and braided brake lines. Even on street tires right now (Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's). Anyone run the Toyo RA-1's on a heavy car like this? What kind of wear to get from a set? Thanks, Mitch
jon dawes
hey there. i don't run in american iron, but the rules dictate which tires can be run: 7.2 Tires/Wheels American Iron- The Toyo Tire RA-1 will be the Spec tire. Any Toyo RA-1 meeting a maximum width of 275mm (according to manufacturer specifications) and maximum wheel diameter of 17 inches will be allowed in the American Iron class. Any wheel with a maximum wheel diameter/width of 17†
cmchopeful
I currently run in HPDE 3 and don't need the Toyo's yet. I was just wondering how long they last 2 weekends, more, how long. I'll run the spec tire when I get there. As far as springs go I would like to go ahead and buy the right srings and shocks now to get used to the handling. Hence my question about spring rates. do I need 800# fronts and 300# rears, what do I need. Thanks, Mitch [/img]
CMC #37
You need to go on the CMC board and also there is useful info for you on http://www.frrax.com , the F-body Road Race and Autocross board. Many 3rd and 4th gen CMCers hang out on the FRRAX board. The hot set-up for 4th gens are the Unbalanced Engineering Bilsteins and fairly stiff springs. You need to speak to Jason at Unbalanced and he will custom tailor a package for you. Unbalanced is a sponsor on the FRRAX board, his website is http://www.unbalancedengineering.com Your LS1 car is elgible for CMC2 as you will see after reading the CMC rules. If you are around for the Nationals please visit us in CMC/AI!
pederb
Some AI guys run the whole season on one or two sets of Toyo's
cmchopeful
I'll check out the Frrax board, I did not post on the CMC forum due to the lack of activity and really wanted to get a sampling of of spring rates used and what shocks. Really good news about the Toyo's. I've had some tell me that I'd be lucky to get 2 weekends out of them with a heavy car. Thanks, Mitch

Thanks, Mitch We can't answer your questions if you don't post 'em on the CMC board! You'll always get answers there. Be sure to read the rules first. Spring rates most folks prefer are on the higher end in the 950 and up to 1200 on the front and 300 and up in the back. Some like softer - depends on your style. I was using a softer set-up and went through more Toyos than I like. My car is 100lbs overweight. Once I went to a stiffer set-up the tires wore a lot less. Many CMCers only use a couple sets a season.
cmchopeful
The CMC forum says that only administrators can post new topics. I guess that solves the CMC activity question. Mitch

pederb
I'm not sure the CMC guys are the right guys to give advise on coil over spring rates, coil overs are not allowed in CMC.
CMC #37
I'm not sure the CMC guys are the right guys to give advise on coil over spring rates, coil overs are not allowed in CMC. Coilover set-ups from specific manufacturers are allowed up front only in 4th gens only. This rule started in 2002. 8.36.41 through 8.35.5.1 - Allow late model GM cars to use front coilover springs without adjusting corner-weights. I've got the Global West model myself. QUASAR
Mitch, I run koni SA in front with ground controls and 550 lb springs. It works pretty good for street/track. If I had to do it again i'd probably go a little stiffer, 600-700 in front. For an all out race car I have no idea. I run koni DA's in the rear with Strano springs (150lb). What i'm running is alot softer than what I've seen on some American Iron fbodys. One in particular had 850lb front springs. Nice running with you last weekend. Did you go out on the last session on Sunday? I left after the skys opened up again.
cmchopeful
John, I remember your car, fast, very fast and we got to talking on the grid while waiting for and unfortunate accident to clear. Never could catch you guys. Got passed a lot by that Carrera Turbo though. I did go out in the last session, boy was it slick. I just worked on my rain lines not worried about pace. With the open passing I gave a couple of point byes in corners to get used to trusting my fellow drivers. Everyone did well. I was looking at bumping up the suspension for next year and maybe running in HPDE 4 and wanted some advice, thanks for your input. I thought about running the Ground Control Kit and lowering the car maybe an inch or so in the rear. Gotta buy a new car though to run CMC. Mines an automatic, though I did get down to runnning a 1:51 this past weekend. Tell you what, an automatic will definitely teach you throttle control. I really have to watch the downshifts exiting keyhole and going over the hump into Thunder Valley. See you at Nelson, Mitch
QUASAR
I won't be at Nelson. I'm gonna try to do Gingerman HPDE-only with Midwest. 1:51 huh? Did you have someone timing you? I have no idea what I was running. I should have had someone time me for reference. I'm dying to know where I stand. Plans are to run Time trials next year. Currently my car lands in TTA with a few points to spare. I think I might but some big wide tires on it and try not to get my ass kicked too badly. cmchopeful
I use my in car video to dissect each lap. The timer is visible and I track the lap times. Rat Racing Graphics has a special for TT numbers. Me I sit in TTD with +7, so my first step would be tires probably Toyo's. I'll have to see what the Ground Control setup cost me. Have fun at Gingerman. Mitch
QUASAR
Is your car completely stock? Those points sure do add up in a hurry.
cmchopeful
Completely stock, except for brakes and those changes are just CarboTech XP10 pads and StopTech braided brake lines with ATE Blue fluid. I am going to review my modification options over the winter, trying to decide what direction I want to go with this car or maybe another. Mitch Mitch, I race a 96 SS Camaro in AI and its heavy 3370#. I get 2 race weekends out of a set of Toyo RA1's with 750# fronts and 250# rears. If your cars an LS1 move up to AI and you'll get competitive after a while.
