John Milne Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I would like to eliminate the stock hood latch and use hood pins. Is this legal in 944 Spec? John Quote
DavidH Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 This might seem like a dumb question, but what are the advantages to eliminating the stock set up? I would assume weight, but that is not significant...right? Safety maybe? Quote

Some advantages are that others can access under the hood without enting the car(i.e. crew can check oil level, saftey crew can open hood). some dissadvantages are added cost over using stock latch and no saftey latch (you forget the hood pins your going to do some damage). John Milne Posted February 29, 2008 Author Posted February 29, 2008 in my case I want to remove the stock latch to give me a little more room when pulling the engine from the top. My guess is that there is no weight savings by the time you fabricate some type of mounting for the pins. John Quote

My car still has the safety latch, just took out the rest - best of both worlds. Quote
Weston Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 If you ever needed to extinguish an engine fire, you'd probably want hood pins, rather than having to pop the hood from inside the car, and then stick your fingers into fire to release it from the latch. I still have the stock setup myself though. Quote
Bruce L. Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 actually, you would want to spray the extinguisher in through the cracked hood before lifting it up, as that would suck the flames right into your face cheers, bruce If you ever needed to extinguish an engine fire, you'd probably want hood pins, rather than having to pop the hood from inside the car, and then stick your fingers into fire to release it from the latch. Weston Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 actually, you would want to spray the extinguisher in through the cracked hood before lifting it up, as that would suck the flames right into your facecheers, bruce Right... opening the hood just feeds the fire, so you should just shoot the extinguisher through the cracks, from underneath, etc., until more help shows up. But if the fire is going that strong, no one is going to want to search for the hood release inside the car and then to burn themselves on the latch to get the hood open, so I think hood pins could make access a bit easier and safer, especially for course workers and the fire crew. 944-Spec#94 Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Of course even better is an on board fire system that hits the fire without even needing to stop the car. Quote
cullen winter Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Shazam ! I just got mine plumbed with a nozzle over the fuel rail, and one at the header. Only problem with extinguishing before stopping is that I too, will get extinguished, which could make the act of driving to a stop a little exciting !! Quote
