Sarwat Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Hey guys, I'm looking for a HC car that I can use for HPDE this year and I'll join you guys in HC next year (or later this year). However, since I don't want to go all out and buy a tow vehicle and a trailer right off the bat the car also has to be street registered. I'd prefer something around $6k - I saw some really good deals in the previous threads such as Casey's Integra or Mike Lock willing to sell his car with the LS swap for an attractive price etc... Another option is that I buy a street car, install a cage, suspension and race it in H4. Can anyone tell me what the going rate is for a rollcage these days? I've been out of the loop for about 4 years. I'm open to suggestions. Lastly, anyone here switch from Spec Miata? I'm kinda sorta considering that too but only because they seem cheaper to run and the racing action with 30+ cars looks tempting. Quote

Sarwat Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 Jimmy, I figure I can pick up a CRX for around $1500 + $2k for the cage + $1500 for suspension + $1k for seat, tune up etc. I can do all the work myself except I don't trust my welding skills for a cage. Might end up a bit more than $6k but should be close. What am I missing? Although I'd prefer a built car it's usually the better route but I'm not sure how many street legal HC cars are out there. slammed_93_hatch Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 window net, driver and center net, Fire bottle, Harnesses, wheels, tires, sway bars, ect Also you might reconsider the idea of the crx, it is not an easy car to drive. Quote
Sarwat Posted March 2, 2008 Author Posted March 2, 2008 Ah I missed the wheels and tires. When I said $1k for the seat and $2k for the suspension I mentally included harness, window nets and sway bars unless I'm way off in my guesstimates. Wheels will definitely add a bit more to the target price. Tires I'll likely need even if I buy a built car...unless I'm lucky and the car comes with fairly fresh RA1s. I didn't know about the CRX being hard to drive thanks for mentioning that. Can you give me some details on why that is and what is a good car to consider for H4? I figure any car with the least amount of weight allowed is probably the best option as it'll handle better and will be easier on the consumables. Quote
Zook Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Whatever you think it will cost to build a racecar, double that figure and that's what you will really end up spending. Same thing for build time. Hell, you can apply this philosophy to just racing in general. Quote

Zook Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 Yeah I paid more for my car than what you're looking to pay for. It was/still is rough around the edges. Just be prepared to sink more money into the car even if it is already built. I don't regret it; it's part of buying someone elses car. Finding all the little things that only the builder knew about. Probably one of the biggest pros to building your own is that you know the history start to finish. Quote

I can find you a car, and get a cage installed in it for around $4k. I would recommend a DA integra. Much cheaper to find good condition shells, and are the best driving honda platform, IMO.
