Seat question

Are there guidelines about how OLD of a seat you can use in 944-Spec? I didn't see anything about it in the rules. I have a choice between a 2000 Sparco Corsa or a 2007 Corbeau Forza...both between $150-200. Are either one THAT much better?

If your seat is not FIA approved or is FIA, but older than 5 years you need a back brace. If I remember correctly, the Corbeau Forza is a tube frame seat, which would be illegal in NASA, for good reason. Your seat is one of the primary pieces of safety equipment. Buy older tires (lot's of good RA-1's out there now), skip an event or two, but don't be cheap here.

Good deals can be found if you're patient , but as Eric said don't skimp. It's going to hold your butt, and could save it. FIA seats come up for sale often, just make sure the seller can give you a date from it. I got a Sparco Pro2000 (made in '05) for $250 last winter, so I already got 1 season out of it, and will make it a passenger seat when it "expires", (if I get the chance to instruct). I will be saving up for a really good seat in the mean time.

After checking, it looks like both of those seats are tubular chassis seats. What kinds do people have? Kirkey? Sparco? Recaro?

Buy a Butler Built halo seat with shoulder supports. It will cost about $500/600 dollars and will save your neck or your life.

It will help you to be faster too, as you will be more secure in your seat and will, therefore, be more confident.

I like the Kirkey Int. Road Race seat. I will probably go with that as soon as I get the cage in. I'm not very tall (5'11")...has anyone had problems with their helmets and the roof? In my currents seats, I really have to scrunch down to make room for my helmet. It looks like the Kirkeys are a lot lower than my made-in-china-for-Kragen specials that came with the car. There shouldn't be a problem...otherwise guys who are over 6 feet would be out of luck.

I have the Kirkey Intermediates and love them. I have not seen their new full containment seat in person but it looks interesting. I have spent 40 hours in my kirkey and it was still confortable. Great shoulder support. Also you can mount it very low if need be.

I am 6 feet tall. I removed the seat rails, cut out the bottom metal (I have an 88) to get down to the floor pan. I mounted the seat on steel between the sill and the tunnel. The seat does not attach to the floor pan but is right on it. I gained another inch or so by cutting out the bottom seat track reinforcing metal stuff. We have seen one move sideways when the floor pan deformed in an impact. I also have a 25 degree recline on the back. The recline angle improves head clearance considerably as well. I personally think it is more comfortable for longer periods of time but that is a personal preference.

I have no head clearance issues with the above installation.
