Car Numbers

Hello All,

I will be attendign my first HPDE event in April and I wanted to clarify the rules about numbering my car. Once I am assigned a number (I assume a couple weeks before the event), what should I use to number my car? Shoe Polish? Tape? I would like to use a way that does minimal damage to the car's exterior. Thanks.

Many people use painter's tape as it's cheap, easy to work with, and doesn't harm your car's finish. You can get it at a hardware store or even Walmart. Just get a color that contrasts well with your car's paint.

You can also use white shoe polish on your side windows.

If you plan on doing this for a while, you might want to look into buying magnetic numbers or make them yourself using magnetic sheet material. It looks better and is reusable. Just slap them on your car and go.

Well then shoe polish would be a bad idea because the numbers have to be on the body. Being as the event is in April I would recomend getting 10 inch tall magnetic numbers or using masking tape in a contrasting color to your car if your car is made of plastic....

Hope this helps!

First thing...when you sign up for an event, you will choose 3 numbers of choice, first one being the number you want and second and third are if someone signed up before you and already picked that number.

If this is your first event. Just get some painters tape in a contrasting color. Everyone does it so you will blend in. I would advise against shoe polish on the windows for the reason that water will wash it off. If this happens and it gets on the paint...your going to spend a lot of time waxing it out of your paint as well as it may damage the paint. I only know of one person that has used it before that I have seen.

As far as magnetic numbers, make sure you run some tape down the leading edge to make sure they stay on the car. They can come off. I have run over a couple of them on the track.

If your car is fiberglass, magnetic numbers won't work.

DOH!!!!! I cant believe I forgot that point.

For NASA , shoe polish numbers on the glass are not permitted.

Everyone should really be familiar with the rules.

the numbers are covered in this document along with a lot of other things everyone who participates should be familiar with.

Same for aluminum.

just use tape. you will most likely not be sure of your number until you get to the event. and like someone else said, losts of people use tape, so you won't be alone. I have seen some very nice tape jobs, and quite a few not so

One point I did not see made... ask a corner worker what they think of blue painters tape for numbers. It sucks for them.

I picked a 3 digit number I like. When I sign up, my first choice is the 3 digit number, my second choice is the last 2 digits, and my third choice is the first 2 digits. If I get second or third choice, I just cover the number I dont need.

For 19$ I got 2 11x14 white magnetic panels with the numbers on there. I get to the track, toss them against the door and I am done. Or you can vinyl removable ones. I don't remember where I got mine, but try trackdecal.com. He has done some other work for me and is great to deal with.

Tape numbers are OK as long as you spend the time to make them clearly visible. They are a really bad idea in the rain. You can use vinyl contact paper that comes in rolls to make decent numbers. The CCR defines how the numbers need to be. I have and will stop cars at Pit in and make them fix poor numbers. If you don't have the correct number or fail to make it clearly readable you risk being black flagged and/or DNF if it is a Qual. session. This one thing causes significant problems in how smoothly the event runs.

IMO, if you are going to do more than a DE every once in a while, if you are really going to make a hobby out of this, but some numbers. magnetic if your car will accept them, and reusable vinyl if it wont. You will not regret it, it will make one less thing you have to worry about the day you get to your event.

One other thing.......

someone has already chosen 1 or 11 or 111

same thing with 7, 77, 777

13 is not too popular

be prepared to have to change the number. That is why the registration form has a place for a number and 2 alternates.
