Tiger Racing’s Paul Brown Returns to World Challenge

Covina, California (3 March 2008) - With Sebring just weeks away, Tiger Racing’s Paul Brown has been brought in to pilot the #96 K&N Engineering Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car for the season opener. Paul is no stranger to the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT series with 44 starts in his career including 24 top tens and 11 top 5 finishes. He took a career high finish of 2nd at Vancouver ’s street race after leading the first half and suffering from a broken transmission. Brown’s experience and demonstrated ability is what attracted K&N Engineering to the program. The #96 Porsche will carry K&N’s signature colours at Sebring.

“I am very excited about returning to World Challenge,” Paul commented “this is where I cut my teeth in road racing, so it’s like coming home.” Paul’s only previous start at Sebring came as a last minute substitute for an injured driver where Paul literally jumped into a Corvette as it rolled onto the track for the presentation lap. With no practice, and having never driven the 3.7 mile track before, Paul managed to charge from 31st to a 15th place finish.

The new 997 GT3 will be prepped by 911 Design out of Montclair , CA where Paul will be teammates with Eric Olberz who returns for his third year in World Challenge driving the Sport Chalet #29 Porsche.

“The guys at 911 Design have been great to work with and have been focused on bringing me up to speed on the GT3.” Brown said and added, “With the automotive powerhouses of K&N Filters and Eibach Springs behind us and the technical support of ERP Suspension Engineering, this could be a very exciting year.”

Charles Maier, Sports Marketing Director for K&N said, “I’ve known Paul for years and he is nothing short of 100% focused on driving and being great at it. He is a man of integrity in business and simply does what he says he will. When this opportunity came to partner up with Paul, I knew that he would be a good ambassador for K&N in an area of motorsport that we have not been so active in as of late. I personally love road racing and feel that we, as a company, need to continue to mine out solid relationships in this category of motorsports. We wish Paul and Tiger Racing all the best at the season opener, Sebring!”

Along with K&N Engineering, manufacturers of high performance air and oil filters and air intake systems, associate sponsorship includes Tiger Racing, Eibach Springs, ERP Suspension Engineering, JRZ, Roller Hoop, G-Stream and OpalGuy.com.

Is there going to be any TV coverage of WC from Sebring?

Yes, but it's not exactly clear when. SPEED's website sux. From looking through the weeks after the first race though, there are two, 1-hour blocks that are labeled "Sebring" appearing on Friday, 21 March, starting at noon EST. That's my best guess for the first showing and it looks like there are the usual repeats at 3 am the following week.

Paul kicked serious arse! He was in a car that was underpowered and under-tired. However, mother nature leveled the playing field friday afternoon and rewarded talent over hardware

I didn't fair so hot... got balked in qualifying (had two cars spin in front of me) and had a bad start. Fought back as much as possible for a semi-respectable finish.

Good looking car Pat, LS1 under the hood?

When will the offical results be out?

Posted

Looking at the results, can anyone provide a link to the Brandon Davis Entry? Says "Ford Mustang Cobra". Interesting he out qual'd the regulars!

Uh, Brandon's car is similar to his father, Mike's car. Brandon was a Touring Car standout in 06 and 07; very good driver.

We hosted a little partay at our rig Thursday after qualifying and got to hang out with Mike and team... nice guys.

The cars aren't exactly anything like what you'd expect to see:

Transaxle (hewland I think), inboard mounted rear shocks/springs, carbon body, chopped up floor, etc... they are two of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.

And Peder, if we could put an LS1 in the Mazda, we would... that thing makes like 235whp

Hay guys, Thanks for all the support online and it was great having familiar faces right around the corner with Patrick pitted down from us who is also racing in an ultra competitive field with his Mazda and Ross running Davis's "Freakenstein Mustang" operations. Very, very trick Mustangs but I don't think they will meet the AI "spirit" so to speak, it makes my AIX car look under-built for CMC.

Anyway, the K&N Porsche was defiantly a new experience and I found myself backwards in practice more times than I car to admit. We started off slow and I spent the time trying to get comfortable and used to the new car with the whole missing a couple cylinders and the motor in the wrong location thing. I thought I was going to have a chance to put everything together in qualifying when the red flag came out for a blown motor on the front straight which took to long to clean up. The starter said that he hit the deck literally due to flying parts and shrapnel, it was an LS6 that let go BIG for those interested. One of the crew guys walked by us holding a connecting rod and pin that made it over the front straight wall into the pit lane.

So SCCA took our best practice laps for a qualifying time which sucked for us way down in 24th. We got to the track Friday morning about 11:30 to see that the the Toyo truck was gone, since our race was at 4:40 it didn't seem like a big deal at the time. After having beautiful weather and sunny skies for 4 days it was about to change. Late Friday we watched the dark clouds roll in and that 20% chance of showers was looking a little more like a reality and sure enough as we were sitting on the grid I heard this tap, tap, tap. I actually looked around and checked my mirrors before the big drops hit the windshield. As we roll off for the pace lap the taps become more consistent and by the end of the first lap it was raining. CRAP, no rain tires, they were on the truck that left at 11, which was a little disturbing since the sign on the truck said they were there going to be there until 1 pm. Oh well, I guess I should have made up my mind earlier.

The standing start turned to a rolling start that was then waved off. I radioed in to the crew and told them not to worry to much if I drop back a little to watch the mayhem. Well it was a good idea but once the flag flew I found myself in the middle of it and running offline to pick up a few spots while trying not to get taken out or go off at the same time. Lap 2, full coarse cautions, Vette in the wall, Porsche in the mud, Viper sideways blocking the track, it was nuts. The spray was so bad that seeing a car 10 feet in-front of you was difficult at times but we soldiered on. By the end of the race we managed to move to 10th place and keep the car clean, not to say I didn't have a few "moments" but it seemed to work out in the end. I actually had what I would refer to as a migraine headache from the concentration needed just to keep the car on track, very stressful situation in treacherous conditions.

All in all I am very happy to come home with a top ten in my return to World Challenge and can't thank the guys at K&N Filters, Eibach Springs, ERP and 911 Design enough for giving me the opportunity to get back in the game and prepping a great car.

Long Beach is next, hopefully I can get a better handle on the new driving style required to keep the K&N Porsche pointed straight.

#96? Is that just a coincidence, both car have number 96!

Paul will we see in AI at all this year?

Posted

No coincidence, I got to pick my car number which was #96 most of my World Challenge career.

I will be back in AIX at some point, motor and trans out being rebuilt now. The only thing that would keep me away is if someone wanted to buy my car, but that would only last so long since I'm dying to build a S197 chassis. I miss the torque, but the sequential doesn't suck.

Cheers,
