Bradicus Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Has anyone tested the R8's and found the pressure they run at best? I have been reading a lot of conficting data and wonder if anyone has done some 'real life' testing on their spec 944. Someone whom can lay down a steady stream of lap times? I've done some testing but in all honesty my driving is not consistant enough to be of much use. Still fun as hell to test, but no use to man or beast. I still wonder as to shaving. There is some squirm, but didnt seemed to matter. I'm not really concerned with the back to back with RA1's because it doesnt matter to me except as a curiousity. Cheers, Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Well, Glenn Gormley is starting to do some R888 testing. He is fast, consistant and has many years of driving 944 spec cars. Full tread unshaved tires seem to be heavy like full tread RA-1's. However they don't have any tread squirm due to the large blocks. I believe they will take some break in sessions just like shaved RA-1s. Right now we are working on tire pressures. The RA-1s would run best around 38 PSI. Some guys like 1-2 psi lower and most found then to lose grip over 40 psi hot. We are still looking for the sweet spot on R888. Bryan Shackleford is out Toyo dealer and he also been involved with testing of the R888 by Toyo. Most of that testing was done on heavier cars and tires with shorter sidewalls, but he has found some rather nasty experiences with shaved R888 and when guys run too low a pressure and ride the sidewalls too much. His advice was to make sure you NEVER run over the little triangle on the outside edge of the tire. If you do start rolling over that triange you need more pressure. He believes the tires may need a little more pressure than the RA-1s. Glenn's initial testing seems to show that a slight increase from the RA-1 (maybe 1-2 hot) maybe needed for the R8888, but it is too early to tell for sure. Time will tell however as we have just embarked on using these tires. There was a pretty strong body of knowledge on the RA-1 given the spec miata experience. That translated well to the our cars. The R888 is pretty new to everyone and we just do not know all the details on how to make them work well on a 944 spec car. We will share what knowledge we can get over the next few months. Quote
