martinc98 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I'm just jumping into NASA AI and will need to buy some Toyos. My problem is that, just due to scheduling, I'll probably only be able to make 1, maybe 2 NASA events in 2008. Given that, I'd like to buy a set of Toyos that I can still run in 2009 (assuming I can get races out of a set...might be optimistic with both qualifying and race sessions...) Will the RA-1 be illegal on Jan 1st? If not, I'll go with RA-1s now, knowing I can still use them if there's anything left of them for the first event or two in 2009. If not, I'd like to go with R888s now, run them in 1 or 2 events this year, and then have them for next season also... Any chance of a reasonable over-lap so I can keep the costs down? (I searched thru all the prior posts I could find on the timing of R888s, but I couldn't seem to find a difinitive answer...I had the impression that some guys were running R888s now...) Quote
stevepoe Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I'm not sure on this but if your only thinking of running two events why not just buy them and run aix is someone says anything.. with only two events it's not like your racing for a championship or anything........food for thought Quote
Frank Corkran Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Here is the thread where JWL confirms that RA-1's are the only legal AI tire this year, R888's only next year. You can however run R888's in practice this year and RA-1's in practice next year. For qualifying/races you must be on the legal spec tire at the time. Another option is you might be able buy a set of "slightly used" RA-1's for this year from one of the front runners in your region. Consistent winners rack up a lot of Toyo Dollars, so they can more easily afford to run only fresh tires and sell off the used ones. A set in near new condition should easily last you 2 events at most tracks, barring mishap or frequent/severe brake lockup. Even if you end up throwing them out in Jan. with some useable life remaining, the loss is covered by the initial savings. Or just buy the R888's and run AIX this year like Steve suggested. Doing that will also get you comfortable on the new tires before your first AI race in '09. Quote
martinc98 Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Thanks for clarifying - and great suggestions! If I want to run 1 or 2 events this year as AIX, I can just use my Kumhos from ASedan and not worry about it until next year. Quote
pederb Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 You can run any DOT tire brand in AIX, only AI has a spec tire Quote
