If any of you NASA So Cal boys want some seat time before the next event, the POC is running the Triple Crown next weekend at Willow... There is a Short track event, 3 Races (one on Sat and two on Sun...) Time Trials, etc... We currently have 16 944UTBS's registered already, and we would LOVE 20 on grid.... Its gonna be a hoot!!

Come on out!!

Jim,

What's the licensing crossover between NASA and POC ? If I come down to SoCal will I be able to race with POC or just do their short track stuff ?

Posted

Jerry, usually not a problem for experienced racers... I PM'd you...

Damm, no problem for experienced racers but what about the rest of us, Jim?

I cooked my motor last weekend at Fontana or I would be all over it. Of course, the cooked motor was all Mad Dog's fault (or was it Tim's). Oh well, in any event, it couldn't have been MY fault.

Engine is being fixed and I will be ready to go soon.

What an amazing weekend. We had 17 944utbs's and TIM COMEAU, the GOD of all things 944 showed up to rent a car to one of our drivers... On Friday, I had a slight problem, when my exhaust valves and pistons got together and TC was right there... I had a buddy drive in a junk yard head and head gasket and TC helped me "throw it in" We finished the job at 11:20 and by NOON, we were on pole!! You have GOT TO LOVE these cars...

I literally grinded junk yard crap out of the combustion chambers for 90 minutes before bolting the head on... and still ran fast times (1:36s) at WSIR....

I cant think of a better car or better people to run with..... 944s rule!!!

So much for pro built motors ruling the roost!

Glad to see you could stay out on track Jim

Well, the head would have gone on even quicker if I hadn't caught the fact that they had all 4 intake manifold gaskets in upside down! Injectors don't like it all that much when their spray pattern gets half blocked......

I didn't help all that much but we worked well together bouncing ideas back and forth for the broken bolts, running tools back and forth, etc. But, it held together for qualifying just fine, so we hoped it would last for the race. I just went up and down the starting grid warning all the other drivers that Jim Marks in the orange 944 might bail out at speed, at any time during the sprint race.

We used safety wire and "handcuff" sized zip ties to hold the fuel rail in place. I don't think we had to resort to the mother of all trackside fixes...............duct tape!

No, but seriously, it was just another example of SoCal 944 drivers banding together and contributing what we have and what we know to get a car back onto the race track.

........Glad to serve....

I was not even going to mention the fact that we zip tied on the fuel rail....

But it was zip ties AND safety wire! And they were really big zip ties!

Seriously, it was a great battlefield fix and you ended up winning the battle and the war, Jim!

I second that! I had the opportunity to watch Jim at work when he visit us at Infineon, fast guys are just fast regardless of equipment.

Great job on the race and getting the car back on the track.

Well, reading about this makes me proud to be a 944er. Way to go gentlemen. What a wonderful statement about what it all means as racers on the track and partners off the track.

Jim we missed you this weekend out at the track. I know it was just a 1 dayer and not worth the drive, but you were missed.

See you in May! PS... I hope the motor issues have been worked out by then.

Joe, the Red 12 ran the 3 day PCA event last weekend at Fontana. Destroyed one tire and flat spotted 2 others.

I had a provisional license and am now on probation for hitting a tire wall on the west end before going back onto the NASCAR portion.

The spare engine went in with no problems and ran great all weekend. I will be there in May to see you guys again.

Sorry to hear about that. I have to admit that I have NEVER liked that tire wall. It always seemed very much like a "target" to me. I assume the contact with the tire wall was light, but in PCA even light contact is an issue.

Joe, the contact was light, the Red 12 is fine.

Dave destroyed his clutch plate at Fontana so, a spare clutch is now going into the race trailer.

See you guys in May.

How did it fail? Like mine where the center broke away from the outer ring?

I though of bring a spare clutch, but always figured that if it failed at the track I would be too lazy to want to change it there even if I had the parts.

Posted

Jim,

If you mean David Ray, I shipped up a spare clutch disc via John Anderson, but it turned out to be the tranny that was bad. Luckily, John isolated the real problem before ripping into the car to change a good clutch disc!

Posted

Tranny at the track? Easy. Clutch? Not so much....

Remember I am from Laguna... I know Trannys.....

Posted

The center of Dave's clutch ripped out just like yours did, Joe.

Well, what the hell...?

I had a visit from Mark Rondeau yesterday(one of the joint owners of David's car) and he reported that it was the clutch afterall! He said the rubber center blew apart.

Clutch failures can create some strange noises?
