Varkwso Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) Here in the SE at least 50% or better of the TTers are instructors. They do not allow racers to be instructors anymore at an event they are competing in. It was too tough for students and racers to get to everything on time. Schedules can make it tough for some instructors to grid on time. It also means thery pit early to get to students. We look at the schedule to put TT in the middle of race groups if possible. How do other regions do it? Edited March 26, 2008 by Guest Quote
roadracetransam Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Well in SoCal there is always at least one group between TT and HPDE1/2. Quote

getfast Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Quite an interesting subject. Here in Mid-Atl there are very few instructors who TT. Most of it is the scheduling issue, and the other reason is likely the fact that TT gets less track time per day than HPDE4. We do our best to schedule around it, but with seven run groups x 3 sessions per day each, plus two TT timed sessions (the TT warmup session each day is shared with HPDE3 or 4 depending upon car class) it can get tricky. Here's our upcoming weekend schedule, for reference... Sat: http://www.nasaracing.net/VIR_Mar_08/VIR08_March_Saturday_Schedule_v3.pdf Sun: http://www.nasaracing.net/VIR_Mar_08/VIR08_March_Sunday_Schedule_v3.pdf We have 18 TT'ers signed up so far, which is bigger than average for mid-atl. I think only two or three of those are instructors. And several are racers who are either "super sizing" their weekend, or won't have their racecars ready and will be TT'ing their street cars instead. On the plus side, we are doing *eight* TT license check rides on Fri-Sat. Food for thought, Jon Quote

Jon We may get less time....but with only 18 on track, it should be wide open! Quote
getfast Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 More like 20-25 on track, with the "instructors get a grid pass for a bonus session" deal. But yeah, that's nothing on 3.3 miles... Jon Quote
kbrew8991 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Jon - do you try to officially grid your TT sessions? Quote
getfast Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Yep, that's a trick we stole from SE after RA last March. Quote

roadracetransam Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 unless you are quick/good/safe enough for TT, you can't move up to HPDE4. actually 95% of the folks who come up to HPDE4 end up doing TT by the second event with us. It is very encouraged. Quote
kbrew8991 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 thats great for you guys the times DE4 or DE3 is dropped on top of us I loathe, those guys try to "race" you and its tough to get any clean track with them doing that crap Quote
Members Shawn M. Posted March 27, 2008 Members Posted March 27, 2008 How many TT sessions/HPDE sessions per day? 4 HPDE 1/2 4 HPDE 3 4 HPDE 4 / TT so 12, 20 min sessions. No problem with TT overrunning the HPDE4 guys? We just made it mandatory in Socal that all HPDE4 drivers must run a transponder so that we can grid up by time. This in itself has made a great improvement on the quality of the track time we got last weekend at California Speedway. Since we had 49 drivers in the run group, we used the merge from the end of friday for the first session on saturday and continued to merge the field as we went. Worked GREAT and we will continue to use it for the rest of the season! Quote
Varkwso Posted March 27, 2008 Author Posted March 27, 2008 When we can fill up a TT session, and we do most times now, we do not have to share with HPDE3/4. We also make it where it requires a TT license to run in TT - so no "drop-ins" from instructors or fast HPDE4 drivers. We have had problems with late joiners and "joy rides" mixed in with GT3 Cup cars and hard charging MR2s trying to get a good lap time. I know it impacted some of my sessions last year. I think we would not have the field we do without the instructor support so it is important we try to schedule it as friendly as possible. I drive a "Team Car" so it makes it a little easier for us sometimes. Quote
