Side net install opinion....

I have replaced my Aluminum seat with a Sparco and now I have to run the right side net. I was playing with different install options and this seems to be the best I have come up with. Is right in line with my head/helmet and will do the job should it need to. Just unsure of the placement of the front since most run it to the dash and mine works best mounted to the halo. The CCR, aside from just mandating one, is not really clear on how it MUST be installed. Thoughts?

I recognize that net - its the same one that was on my 1st 944 Spec Car. It's a bit too short to make it too the dash as it was designed for smaller sprint cars, so I see your dilemma. My concern for your current setup is that when you head pitches forward in an accident, the head net goes up & away from you. It may catch your head OK in a direct side impact, but in an offset impact, it may not. In my old car, I hooked the front up to a racheting strap to extend it to reach the dash, and to be able to snug it up more.

you want the side net to catch your shoulder and the bottom half of your helmet. Bad things can happen if your head is stopped but your torso keeps going. The directions/suggestions on page 69 of the CCR seem pretty clear.

 

As for comparability to your previous setup, do you really feel those head restraints on the ultrashield seat would stop your head/body?

Leggwork's got it right. The net is too high/not long enough. It's purpose is to control the head AND shoulders. Don't skimp on this.

 

As for the halo seat, I participated in a safety seminar at PRI in December put on by the guy that has been developing the safety stuff for NASCAR and CART. He had videos of those wings folding open like a greeting card. I will always have a right side net, even if I get a halo seat.

That's not a "halo seat". A halo seat has thickly padded, rigid wraparound head and shoulder extensions, usually tied into the cage. The FIA halo seats are also stiff enough to contain the driver and his head.

Who said that was a Halo seat? I had bought one, the Sabelt Taurus, but it didn't fit in my car.

I'm speaking generally, but my point is that I will never not spend $100 on a net. The chances of the head restraint failing, or your head moving forward so as to reduce the effectiveness of the head restraint, however small, warrant $100 in the build budget.

You want the top strap even with the centerline of the helmet. You don't want the helmet to be able to hook the chin over the web & you don't want the top web to force the helmet under it. Bottom strap should support the shoulder at about armpit height.

 

The front mount should be as close to perpindicular off of the seat as possible. I find that just above the shifter keeps it away from flailing hands and point bys.

 

Don't be afraid to add some bars to get the net where it needs to be.

Well I got the net installed, much better than my original setup. Only problem I have now is my new seat install is too high. I don't like the way I fit in there. So, back to the drawing board.

Those seat add-ons are only supposed to be head "supports" for cornering. I've seen more than a few internet ad's selling them as "restraints".

I almost fell for it myself.

How did you mount it in the front? Can you post pictures of that? And the rear too come to think of it. I'm having to run a right side net in my car, also a late model 944, and I'm not really sure where to start.

I dont have any pics and since my dash is back together it would be hard to see anyway. It is pretty much a self explanitory install if you have the right net. I saved some $$ and had to use some ingenuity to get this one to work. Your $100 nets are a cut and dry install.
