John Graber Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I wan to run some Non-DOT tires. Either buying cheap take-offs or buying new for tire longevity. Non-DOT tires are penalized in the TT system, yet their benefits clearly help a racer and do not help a TTer from my perspective. Who's with me here? Quote
obzezzed350 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If they help a racer, why wouldnt they help a TT guy? Quote
cosm3os Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 We addressed this issue in GTS. Everyone seemed to agree that the non-dot tires (Grand Am, etc) were no grippier than R6's. The ruling was that this opens it up to having to determine (usually on an ad hoc basis) points on every tire out there. I'm going to use them for practice and swap for qual/races. Quote
kbrew8991 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 You're nuts if you don't think some stupid soft compound Goodyear non-DOT true slick would be faster for 1 lap than a Hoosier A even. The Grand Am and similar Hoosiers (like what Koni Challenge runs) are +10 and classed fairly as well. other than the R888s at +7 (should be +5, despite the marketing they are NOT faster than the RA1) the tires are right. next Quote
Dawg Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 what amazes me is how fast the world challenge gt cars on the r888's (i believe). phoenixR34 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 All the TTS/U/R guys in my region swap back and forth between Hoosiers and Goodyear or Michelin slicks.. there is a considerable difference between Hoosiers and the non-DOT tires. Typically the slicks are a full second faster on a 1.5 mile track, if not more. I don't know if that justifies 20 more points, but it's debatable. Quote
