tech stations free?

Just went to my first HPDE and got me car teched in Greensboro, away from the track. I wanted to do it early so I had time to fix any problems before the last minute. I went to the shop listed and had to wait 2.5 hours, until they had no other customers, and was then charged a 1/2 hour labor fee of 40 bucks. Is the tech at the track free? And do I have to have the car teched for each event? Tech could get expensive.

Tech at the track is free, and yes, you need to have it done at each event.

If you took the car to an authorized NASA tech shop, they shouldn't have charged you anything for the inspection, but they can charge you to fix stuff (with your approval).

Disclaimer: This is how we do it here (Midwest and Great Lakes regions).

Yes, I took it to one of the tech centers listed on the nasa website. And no, they didn't touch a thing. Just looked at it.At first I was ok with the longgg wait because I thought it was free and the were taking care of the paying customers first. After all that wait then they charged me 40bucks. It was a Honda specialist shop and I had a camaro, maybe that had something to do with it. If they would have told me that up front I would have called somewhere else. It was the closet shop to my house. Next time I'll do it at the track!

Brand should have nothing to do with it. The inspection that is done is generic, and is no different from one car make to another (for HPDE). Talk to your regional director and tell them what happened. They may want to reconsider having that shop on the list.

the specifics vary by region - e.g in Rocky Mountain, there is a list of tech insp stations that do it for free, and NASA charges $20 at the track to encourage people to get it done beforehand. Check with your local region people.

thanks

The tech that is completed at the shop is pretty easy to do. I was told in my HPDE this weekend that NASA is very interested in the driver taking more responsibility for their car. So, why not do it yourself? The more you know about the vehicle, the better. In the MA region, we are allowed to do our own inspection for HDPE. I'm guessing you were at VIR with me this week. You can do it yourself and then the instructor will do a cursory, asking you some questions to get comfortable with your knowledge, the first time you hit the grid.

Easy peasy!

I had no idea I could do it myself.I thougt a cert. nasa tech official had to perform the task. I do all my own work on the car so I diff. could do the inspection.Awesome!

Again..... this is all very specific to your region and to your situation. Read the CCR and check with your regional director before doing anything.

If I review tech sheets here in the RM region (and I do...) and I found a driver who self tech'ed themselves through HPDE they would be fined and put on probation.

I've been a gearhead since I was a tenager in the 80's and have always had a car in some stage of restoration. But I can see the importance to knowing what your looking at and for. I was amazed at the speed of some of those cars at Vir this past weekend. And some spots on the track it wouldn't take much fluid to help someone off the track.

PS. I would definately get the self-tech approved by the powers that be before I tried it.
