jason Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 After this past weekend at RA driving on eggshells on street tires, it's time to start looking at real rain tires. Are the size limits the same for rains vs Rcomps? A 295 Hoosier wet = a 295 Hoosier R6 for example? Quote
vpnwiz Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Yep - same points structure too. But before you drop a ton of cash on Hoosier wets, just consider that unless it's raining all day you won't have a prayer of setting the fastest TT time in the wet. If you do PT as well then they are a must have, but for TT a set of street tires should work if you just want to go out and have fun. Patrick Quote
Trevor57 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I agree. I know that last year there were no events in our region that would have required rains. Quote

Diabolical as Hobbs would say. Character building, yes. Learning experience, yes. Fun, questionable. Quote

mcmmotorsports Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Also, dedicated rain (race) tires have a very soft compound. Meaning, if the track drys up or you get too much heat in them, you will wear them out real quick. Why not look into a brand new street tire that is designed for high performance wet use. Like one of them aquatred thingys. Quote

Very true, it becomes a serious PITA to try to manage tire heat when the track is just partially wet. You always have to go off line to drive in whatever part of the track is still wet. If the track was too dry, and you tried to drive them like regular slicks you would burn them up in one 15 minute session for sure. (Old) street tires were downright evil this weekend at RA. Diabolical as Hobbs would say. Character building, yes. Learning experience, yes. Fun, questionable. I've got Hoosier wets with only ~150hp and I wouldn't describe the drives in the pouring rain at Mid Ohio last year as "fun". Driving in the rain as fast as you possibly can is a scary thing. Which is why I sit out the TT sessions when its wet. I only do that in PT when I have to. Don't get me wrong, if you are getting tires for free then pick 'em. Just know what you're getting into Quote
jason Posted March 19, 2009 Author Posted March 19, 2009 learn how to drive autocrosser?!? Last time I raced in the rain, on these tires, they were new. I had the PAX. In an ASP car. I thought I was superman. Quote
Varkwso Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 We have a lot of wet days here in the SE TT season. Street tires will not hack it with the competition we have on a wet day - and none of us like to lose.... Quote

obzezzed350 Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I have heard from a few rx-7 guys that the Hoosier wets only should be used in an absolute monsoon, otherwise you will cord them quick on a semi-wet track. I have seen some guys have great success with full tread RA1s for the wet. Quote

Spoken from the guy from a class of one Our W2W car came without a wiper system so I have not bothered with any thoughts of running in much water with it. I think full tread RA1s may be OK since I went from full tread to no tread in 10 heat cycles on RA1s on the Vette so they are soft. I would still go with Hoosier wets. The only way to ensure dry events for a year or two is for me to buy a set.... Quote

Spoken from the guy from a class of one I guess I deserved that one. Then again, I don't look at it that way, I consider myself more of the delinquent in detention perfecting my art while I wait for others to join me. Quote
obzezzed350 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 One another note...what do some of you plan on using for rain tires when there RA1 stockpiles dry up? Quote
kbrew8991 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hoosier Wets, Kumho W710, or R888s I recently did full tread R888s on a wet (but not puddled) track and loved them... Quote
