Driver Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I’m looking for something to cover some holes in my hood. I’m punching them in there to let heat out, and I’d like to have something on them to: A - Keep leaves out. B - Maybe keep rain out when moving. C - Cover up what is bound to be a crappy cut. Ebay has all kinds of stick-on "sport compact accents" that could "work", I'm wondering if there's anything else that exists in the racing-parts-world. Quote
Weston Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hardware stores sell some gutter-guard stuff to keep leaves out of rain gutters. It has many uses on track cars as well. As for the vent, I don't have many detailed pictures online, but I added a drop-vent in the hood of my old turbo Integra. It was subtle and worked extremely well in combination with an upper bumper vent (less subtle, but functional) that I also added... air came in through the top of the bumper, went through the radiator, over the turbo, and out the hood. It solved the heat problems that I had been dealing with, plus increased power and prolonged the time before heatsoak set in by keeping the turbo much cooler. Basically, all I did was remove some of the hood's webbing on the underside, cut a slit in the hood, and added a little slit going perpendicular on each end, so then it was possible to bend it down to create the vent. I stuck a small block of wood in there to hold it open and even while I added some supports in the center and on the sides to help it hold it's shape permanently. I just JB-Welded it all together and it held up fine for years... I didn't even have to repaint the hood; I just used a little bit of touch-up paint and it was all good. Quote

edrock96GT Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 (edited) Here is a site with some decent looking stuff that may work: http://www.genesisparts.com/index.cfm?form_cat_id=4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I was considering a set to narrow hood louvers to vent my fenders. Tiger racing http://www.tiger-racing.com/for_sale.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has some inverted paint to match carbon fiber vents as well. Or if you are looking for a proffesional install and can make it down to Dallas, Fulcrum Motorsports http://www.fulcrummotorsports.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is developing vehicle specifiic hood vents as well and is looking for new makes & models to develop their prototypes. They will be doing one for my '96 Mustang in the next couple of months. Hope this helps! Edited March 18, 2009 by Guest Quote

They've got good stuff, but MAN is that expensive! $150 each, $300 could probably get me a custom Hairyglass hood. Quote

All I have is a hand-held Jig saw. DONT use a jig saw, it will make a mess and can pucker the metal if it catches goofy. You got 3 easy options for tools, and a 4th if theres room Either use a angle grinder with a thin cutoff wheel (#2 choice) High speed air grinder with cutoff wheel (#1 choice) Or circular saw with a abrasive cutoff disc (#3 choice) However for long cuts more then 10" this is choice cutter. The 4th is a air shearers, they work great but you need a 3/8 pilot hole and you have to account for a 1/4 gap of metal being removed. They dont leave a nasty burr like the grinders but again you need the room to use it nicely. Biggest thing is to keep the cutter moving and keep the metal cool if you dont want the paint to burn/bubble. Quote
edrock96GT Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Yeah I hear ya I updated my previous post as well but if you are looking for something a little cheaper, Agent 47 has something as well, just not as cool looking http://www.agentfortyseven.com/racing/ventilator.html Quote

All I have is a hand-held Jig saw. I measured and drew a line in pencil or tape (don't remember which) on the hood, then used a Black & Decker RTX (it's a $25 Dremel clone with more power) with heavy-duty cutting discs. I sure went through a bunch of discs, and burnt up the motor of the tool I was using, but it worked... eventually. Quote
