NVR2L8 Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 Need some help, please. I am working on a research project / feasibility study. Are you aware of any road courses or tracks that are owned by a city or county, as opposed to privately owned? Preferably, a track of some notoriety and history of success would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Tom Quote
Weston Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I'm aware of three... Pueblo Motorsports Park - Pueblo, CO La Junta Raceway - La Junta, CO Heartland Park - Topeka, KS (iirc, it's city owned land, but privately managed) Quote
Elvenhome21 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I would have never thought a race track could be city owned due to the liability. Fairgrounds I can understand with the county owning the land but almost always theres an organization or a club that insures and leases the track from the county. Quote
NVR2L8 Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 I have been told that Laguna Seca is county owned, having been built on property that was located on Ft. Ord, CA. Also told that Hutchison Island in Savannah, GA is part of a city park. Track was managed for years by a private company that went bankrupt. Now I understand that the track is reopening, but still owned by the city. Anyone care to chime in on these tracks? Thanks Quote
JSirota Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Portland Int'l Raceway is owned & operated by the city of Portland, OR. Quote
JSirota Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I have been told that Laguna Seca is county owned, having been built on property that was located on Ft. Ord, CA. True. It is operated by a local non-profit group called SCRAMP. I think both Laguna Seca and Portland meet the OP's criteria of notoriety and success. Quote
Sidney Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 The Milwaukee Mile is on the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. It's an oval but they have an infield road course and rent it to clubs. Sidney CMC #64 Quote
Bryancohnracing Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Most Fairground racetracks are owned by Counties or Cities and in many cases are operated by the management of the fairgrounds. As an example, The DuQuoin (IL) Magic Mile is owned by the county, managed by a county employee and the tracks is maintained by county staff. They promote events there as well, such as ARCA. I know this from personal experience working with them on events. If they had a road course it'd be a brilliant group to work with as they are good people. One other track that is on City owned land is Gateway International near St. Louis. The city of Madison IL owns the land and the original developer got a 99 year lease on the land. I'm sure there are others we don't know about. Bryan Quote
78kona Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I may be wrong, but I think that the Nurburgring is owned by the town or government. When you drive on it all normal autobahn rules are supposed to apply. I do not know if this applies to your study due to the fact that it is not in the U.S. Quote
ILikeEsses Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Watkins Glen used to be owned by the City of Watkins Glen as a corp. I think it still is. Quote
getfast Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Watkins Glen is owned by ISC just like most other NASCAR tracks, no? Quote
miwifri Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Watkins Glen is owned by ISC just like most other NASCAR tracks, no? True. From "Track History" on the WGI web site: "In 1997, International Speedway Corporation, whose holdings include Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Darlington Raceway and Phoenix Int'l Raceway, became sole owner of the historic road course, exercising a stock option buy-out of Corning Incorporated. The sale completed Corning's mission of rebuilding the race track while revitalizing the Southern Finger Lakes Region." Mike NASA NE HC #23 Quote
