JWL Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Folks- We've recently seen some problems with lugnuts coming loose and studs shearing, so we made a recent addition to the CCR requiring a slightly different approach to securing wheels going forward. See below: 15.18 Lug Nuts - All competition vehicles must use open type wheel lug nuts with enough threads exposed to be able to double nut each of the wheel studs with a minimum of 4.5 threads exposed. If aircraft style lock nuts are employed a minimum of 4.5 threads must be exposed and the requirement for double nutting is waived. Hopefully this helps contain this issue. Please let us know if you have any questions. -JWL Quote
Grizlbits Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I hope you are kidding. Nice April fools joke. Quote
UBR Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 This doesn't actually say you have to double nut. It just says you must have enough exposed threads to be able to... That will probably Rule 15.18.1... Next April Fools Day. j Folks- "must use open type wheel lug nuts with enough threads exposed to be able to double nut each of the wheel studs with a minimum of 4.5 threads exposed. Quote
Micks 41 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Double nutting still doesn't guarantee nonfailure. I recommend we use a red locktite and safety wire?? Quote
JWL Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Dang. Thought I would at least fool some of you. Still, loose nuts can be dangerous so make sure to check yours frequently or have someone on the crew who is handy and able to tighten them up appropriately. -JWL Quote
swhiteh3 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 In all seriousness, requiring a single exposed thread is not a terrible idea (except of course when lug bolts are used on those crazy non-American cars...). Quote
bpanther Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 So.. can I rethread my current studs to a smaller finer pitch (I'm thinking a 3/8-24)? This will allow me to meet the 4.5 thread rule and not have to replace with longer studs. Quote

FYI - It's a joke, DO NOT machine the nuts shorter. I can't believe we actually have to say this nowdays. Quote

I hadn't even considered that I would need to put pig putty in the existing lug nuts and then redrill and retap them at 3/8". Quote
D Algozine Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 All this talk about nuts sounds squirrelly to me (rim shot) Loose nuts........? Doesn't that describe most race car drivers ? Alright, I'll stop already. I lied, one more. "Shearing studs", the trailer for Adam Sandler movie, Zahan. Quote
Black Horse Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 That's it...I'm converting to knock-off spinner hubs like the real racecars have. Quote
