ptracer Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 It looks like there several track configurations available at MMP. Which one will we be running for NASA Nationals? (Hope it's the long one...) Drift
944-Spec#94 Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I have raced on both the 3.0 mile and the 4.5 mile. Both are lots of fun and would be great to host Nationals. The 4.5 mile allows for bigger run groups, but is also a bigger logistical challenge due extra corner stations and the time needed for warm up/cool down and to gather the field for a full course yellow. My 944 spec was turning 2:20 second laps on the 3.0 mile and 3:30 second laps on the 4.5 mile track. Those are some long laps. On the 4.5 mile track I would stay flat out after the checker for 3 miles or so because if I slowed down the cool down lap alone could be 5 mintues. So I just "cooled down" 5-6 turns form the pit in.

Red Tornado Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Can we pitch now for a hour long nats race on sunday due to using the longer course
National Staff Greg G. Posted April 19, 2009 National Staff Posted April 19, 2009 Funny. But many of us don't have fuel tanks large enough to last an entire hour of racing.
944-Spec#94 Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Funny. But many of us don't have fuel tanks large enough to last an entire hour of racing. Well in that case.. . 1 hour races for all! I think my 944 spec will go 1hr 45 to 2hrs on one tank.
National Staff Greg G. Posted April 20, 2009 National Staff Posted April 20, 2009 Do you mean you need to go an hour and a half to finish the same number of laps the rest of us finish in 45 minutes?
kbrew8991 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Do you mean you need to go an hour and a half to finish the same number of laps the rest of us finish in 45 minutes? (its not THAT bad )
944-Spec#94 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Don't worry that is why NASA races are Time limited Races vs Lap limited race. That way us slow cars don't feel so bad.
bpanther Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Running longer races might be an option.... If we were to cut the number of run groups we can fit in longer sessions for everyone. At 4.5 miles and 40+ feet wide, even 100 cars in a run group is a "small" group. Ryan and I are discussing many things - I'll add it to the list.

We have been running 45 minute races since the very beginning and have set the cars up to run as such. Running longer than 45 mins for a race stint can be a problem for a lot of people.

Sweet! if we run the whole track, we need to rename TT to TA since competitors will only get 3-4 laps per session instead of the 7-12 laps most regions normally see.
phoenixR34 Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the possibility of 3-4 laps per session in TT. SoCal TT last weekend proved it's possible to not get a clean lap all weekend, even on a long track!
bpanther Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 We have decided to go with 3.0 miles. Here are the details. viewtopic.php?f=69&t=28153 Ernesto.... no worries, we plan to stick with the 40 minute main race format.
ptracer Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 dave, 40 minutes sounds just right. Any word on which course we'll bs running on? Thanks

ST#97 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 I am actually a little concerned about making 40 minutes on 14 gallons at MMP...only saving grace is the lack of air should mean less fuel burned but I can burn 7 gallons easily in a 20 minute sprint race at our fast track that mimics the MMP 3.0 course... Of course, we have YET to run a full 40 minutes in the AI race the last two years! LOL!!!
