cbuzz Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I was looking at GTS-1 as a second class to run at the Nationals. It looks like we are not real competive in PTE. Fastest guys are a few seconds off the PTE class leaders. Anyone else running a second class at Nats? Looks to me like a great way to get extra track time to learn the track. Rules are at http://www.nasagts.com/ All based on hp to weight factors from dyno sheets. Our cars fall right into GTS-1. Quote
Sterling Doc Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I supersized to GTS-1 last year - just need a dyno. A set of Hankooks or Hooiser will go a long way to making you competitive. That said, if someone were to bring a full aero/suspension optimzed car to GTS-1, they'd run away & hide. Haven't seen it yet, though. Quote
cbuzz Posted April 27, 2009 Author Posted April 27, 2009 I know GTS was new last year but how many entries were in GTS-1? Is this where the Spec 944 guys would normally go? It would be great if we could get a field of at least 20 cars in GTS-1. Quote
Chuck T. Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 in the past we have gone to GTS1. Ian Cole the National series director is looking forward to helping us supersize that way this year. GTS1 might be the third largest class. Quote
ianacole Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I know GTS was new last year but how many entries were in GTS-1? There were 10 entries in GTS-1 for Nationals last year. I do not know if the Porsches were all upsized from 944-Spec, but there were two BMW 325is's, which may have been upsized Spec E30s. Is this where the Spec 944 guys would normally go? I believe that the 944-Spec car works out to a 20:1 weight to HP ratio, so yes, they would naturally fall into GTS-1. If you plan on running non-D.O.T. rubber, the threshold for GTS-2 is 19.99. It would be great if we could get a field of at least 20 cars in GTS-1. Yes, it would be! You'd be eligible for any available GTS contingencies as well. As Chuck mentioned, I'm happy to help in any way I can. Quote
comatb Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I ran my car which was built as a 944 Spec car in Cup and GTS1 at Nationals last year. I added a header, chip and Hoosiers on wider wheels. At 139Hp I was well under the 2008 Cup maximum of 146 Hp and had to weigh 2600 lbs just like Spec. I finished second. In GTS the 139 Hp translated to 2571.5 lbs ( 139 X 18.5 Hp). I won, but as Eric says a car built to maximize the GTS1 rules would walk away. The extra track time really helped in setup and driver preparation. Good luck to you guys. Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Actually our cars are worse in PT. A fully prepped 944 spec actually points out in PT-D not PT-E. To get in PT-E you would need to be slightly underprepped in 944 spec and over weight. My car is slightly over the limit in PT D. Either way our cars are not competitive in PT. The classing does lend itself to our cars. Even so we can run tin GTS1 more competitively, but only because we are at the max for power/weight. Our suspension and tires are no where near the limits so while we can hang on the straights we will get killed, by a fully preppared GTS1 car. Even so it is still probably the best place to supersize since most guys do not put in that much effort in GTS1 chassis development and a good 944 spec car despite is "basic suspensino" and not so sticky tires still corners very well and driver skill can close the gap considerably. cbuzz Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 Great info guys, thanks for the help. I did notice that we can run slicks but was not sure if this would put us in GTS-2. I must not understand the HP/weight rule. Does the Spec944 usually have more TQ than HP? I noticed we have to use the higher of the two numbers. Quote

I must not understand the HP/weight rule. Does the Spec944 usually have more TQ than HP? I noticed we have to use the higher of the two numbers. If you use slicks, your weight to hp ratio cannot exceed 20:1 and remain in GTS-1. If you run a D.O.T. racing tire, your ratio cannot exceed 18.5:1 and remain in GTS-1. Does this help? Quote
cbuzz Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 Yes thank you, it looks like we would have to lose HP or gain weight to stay in GTS-1 with slicks as a Spec 944. I will most likely just run some RA-1's I have been saving Hopefully we can get a good portion of the Spec 944 guys to Supersize. Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I was planning on supersizing, but the cost (both entry fee and tire usage) in this economy is probably going to limit me to just one class. Too bad Quote
Big Dog Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 This sounds like a great idea, Charlie. I am up for going to the second group. How about running some Hoosiers? That might be a hoot. Big Dog Quote
cbuzz Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 My plan was to run R888 or RA-1. I just don't want to have to change set up. Real lazy!!!! Besides it would be better to have all of us on the same tire Quote
cbuzz Posted April 30, 2009 Author Posted April 30, 2009 Hey Jim, looks like our only options for Infineon is June 27-28 or Nov 7-8. I will check my calendar to see if I can go to either one. Quote
Big Dog Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I am signed up. I did not sign up yet for the Supersize deal because I FORGOT. I will go back in and do that. Jim Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 One thing to remember. If you supersize to GTS1 you will need a dyno run on a Dynojet to prove you are class legal for GTS1. The GTS rules are pretty loose so that is all you need, but it would not be fair to any other real GTS1 car to show up with out a dyno sheet. Quote
