Gfaules Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 That's right and I'm not going to be a spectator. I am entered in the 87th running of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb coming up on July 19. PPIHC is the second oldest auto race in America Indy being the oldest. I can remember since I was 8 years old each year being glued to the TV with my father as we watched cars attack Pikes Peak with a vengeance. Not only was the race made even more exciting by announcers like Chris Ekonomaki but the memories of sharing all that excitement as a boy with my father are overwhelming. I suppose many of us got much of a racing roots and ambition from exactly such experiences. I was invited last year which is the first time vintage cars have run PPIHC in many years but since I had just finished running in La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico and due to a death in our family I was unable to attend. The La Carrera Panamericana vintage cars where such a huge success with regards to spectator popularity that they will now be a permanent fixture at the PPIHC. I will be running the same 65GT350R that I ran in La Carrera Panamericana. It was interesting to learn from Carroll Shelby that it was in fact right after his return from winning Lemans that Shelby was at Pikes Peak (because of his Goodyear distributorship) that he met a big wig from Ford and Shelby told him he had a great idea for Ford's 289. This is where they shook hands on a likely deal that in fact became history. Quote
bpanther Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Gary.... There should be a bunch of RM NASA folks there. We will definitely cheer for ya. I may work the mountain or may just hang out. If I'm in the pits at all, I'll track you down. If you are free on Saturday, head down to PPIR (the roval). There should be 35+ 944Spec cars racing as a support show to the late models. Quote
