Racers that TT...

Why do you guys that used to race instead do TT? I guess I'm asking what are the advantages of TT over racing? I'm thinking of doing this, just curious why others do and was it hard to stop racing?

I know on day #2, some of the racers switch to run TT for a few different reasons that I've heard:

1) Almost out of gas or don't want to buy more

2) Want to go for the Hoosier contingency (maybe after seeing Saturday's times)

3) Want to leave early for the drive home

4) Vehicle limping along... might not finish a full race.

There are some very competent cars and drivers in TT that could be racing. I'm wondering why the preference for TT instead of racing. The Hoosier contingency is a good point by the way.

TT is very competitive, but in a different way. I switched to TT on Sunday last weekend for 2 reason one Car count (hoosiers) and 2 I wanted to work on set up of my car and in TT you get 2 or 3 clean laps in racing you don't.

I Love TT

Ditto. I came up through the HPDE/TT program and enjoy TT's as much as racing. I also think that the only way to confirm a new setup is in TT. My race class is usually gridded mid pack and that means I'm in traffic for the whole race. It's hard to evaluate the true potential of the car with 40-50 cars on track and with your competition looking for any opening to pass.

In a race it's more about finishing first at the slowest possible speed to save the car and minimize the risk of a mistake. In TT it's all about what I can get away with for 1 lap while holding my breath........

If I could afford to do both every weekend I would.

In TT you seldom IF EVER see a 2 car (or more) incident.....so if you want to save the car for another day...running TT almost completely eliminate the "the BIG ONE"

For me it's coming down to the cost and time of contact vs. the thrill and rush of wheel to wheel. I'm wondering if the guys that used to race miss that rush bad enough, or if there are other aspects of TT that you find more satisfying that racing. What are the greatest aspects of TT, especially if you used to race or could if you wanted to?

Less sheet metal damage. I love wheel to wheel but I hate to fix my car because someone ran out of talent.

thats great. u care if i use that as a quote in my sig? i like it that much.

For me, I raced wheel-to-wheel for 4 years and now that my daughters are getting a little older (6 and 2) my wife really doesn't like the idea of my racing wheel-to-wheel, even though I've explained to her how safe it is. In my 4 years of racing I usually had the speed to run with the guys up front but never developed the racecraft needed to make all of the passes at the right time. I've also always been a budget racer, so when competing in close wheel-to-wheel competition I always had that in the back of my mind that I couldn't afford to fix the car if it was damaged, so I didn't have the all out attitude that most of the front runners with the budget to fix their car(s) did.

In the end, TT just suits my driving style, budget and family "allowances" at this point in my life. I do hope to return to wheel-to-wheel competition later in life, hopefully once my girls are in their teenage years and can enjoy being at the track with me.

Just my $.02.

Regards,

Sam

there is qualifying (ie ehh, thats good enough I'll get him in the race) and then there is TT (you either get 'em or you don't) though
