ST vs STR

It looks like both are in group D. A while back there was some talk about running one race on Saturday and the other on Sunday so we could supersize. Has that been ruled out at this point? It doesn't appear to be an option in registration.

It is possible that ST and STR can be placed in separate groups.

 

There is no supersize option for STR as there really isn't another class except SU that can supersize to it.

There are several of us out here in California that are eligible for ST2 and STR2. How many cars do we need before it would be interesting enough to separate the classes?

Really the only place to put the other class as of right now is with PTD-PTF.

4 would be the minimum and 8 would probably be the realistic max from our group. Not sure what the rest of the country can produce.

If I could make it i'd be interested.

 

I was told any car eligible for ST can run its STR equivalent... correct?

I might be interested are there any fast STR2 cars out there? On this side of the country they seem to run 4 seconds or slower per lap than ST2 cars

Yes, that is correct.

 

I dont get it Greg. I thought the whole point of STR was to provide a series for tube-frame cars? So how does it work? I can run both in ST2 and STR2?

STR is basically ST, but with open chassis mods, and none of modification factors listed in Section 8 of the Super Touring Rules. So, any car that is legal for ST, would also be legal for STR. However, it clearly doesn't work in the other direction. Every car legal for STR is not legal for ST.

Looking at the current entry list for Nationals, it sucks to think ST2 is losing a few cars to STR2. Beyond that, hope this new class doesnt take away the ST2 regional competition and split it into 2 groups (ST2 and STR2). Hope it works out for Nationals and beyond.

Actually, it looks to me like the STR cars that are listed that are eligible for ST actually Supersized and are running in both.

Maybe im seeing things. I only see 3 names for STR2, and the only name i see that appears to be supersizing is Josh. The other 2 appear to only be running in STR2.

Actually what has happen in Great Lakes and Mid West is it has split the field and in some cases we had 2 & 2 so totally missing car count.

what is should do is balance cars into classes of at least 3 each... 4 free hoosiers > 2.

No kidding but what has happened is the slow cars run with STR2 in the slow run group and we lost car counts. actually you mean zero hoosiers.

What a bummer for you guys. In Socal, during our May Big Willow races, 3 people raced in STR2 instead of ST2. We had 6 in ST2, so it didnt really hurt us, but anytime you lose cars to another class it basically sucks. It would have obviously been more fun if everyone just ran in ST2. Im concerned that our field of ST2 cars might get even more split next year.

Ken, the report from the Regional Directors was that there were "hundreds" of drivers out there that wanted to race with NASA, but did not have a class except for Super Unlimited due to their tube-frame cars. We did not want to just pile fully developed and purpose-built tube-frame cars into your ST classes with a modification factor because our data showed that the modification factor to equalize things would be anywhere from -1.7 to -0.2, depending on the car (and we would have had to choose a single number). If we went with the high number, only the few cars competitive would want to play. If we went with a lower number, production car racers would likely complain. So, we went with the new classes. The new classes also gave you and others a chance to race twice at the Championships.

I did notice that which is cool it would be cooler if STR & ST were on different days

We *should* have 7 cars in STR2 at blackhawk. No chance on any of them being fast though, still all painfully stock motors and no fancy prep
