SAE or STD dyno scaling

Should the scaling on the Dynojet be set on SAE or STD? This can be enough difference to make a car illegal. I just thought there could be some clarification on this subject.

Nobody ever contacted me about this. In my opinion, this discrepancy has been over looked. On my car there is a difference of 6 hp and 7lb\ft of torque just by changing a setting on the dyno. That is enough difference to get a car DQ'ed. By the way my dyno is a Dynojet 248c. There are five or six different settings on the dyno. It seems to me that we need to standardize which one we are going to use.

Beau, I brought the same thing up a while back and never got an answer. SAE is by far the most commonly used setting on Dynojets, and as far as I know SAE is used when there is a dyno check at an event-- at least on this side of the country. Maybe someone from the left coast can confirm.

This should certainly be clarified in the rules, but so far it hasn't.

So when I turn my Mustang Dyno sheet into the admins at NASA, how will they read it? There is no DynoJet in my area.

It will be invalid. The rules are pretty clear that it must be a DynoJet 248. Even running on a Mustang in "DynoJet mode" is not acceptable. I have some friends that pooled their money and own a Mustang but I cannot use it for my NASA stuff...

Then I hope they have a Dynojet 248 at the track. Several times I have seen that JME dyno service was supposed to be there, but I have never seen them.

There must be some kind of conversion figures that could be used.

An Accura group ran tests on both and found that the differences were 18.6% on HP and 17.1% on Torque. However these figures are anecdotal, and not verified in any sense.

Chevy High Performance also did a comparison with a Mustang and a DynoJet last year with the same car going from one dyno to the other. They used my friends' Mustang and the DynoJet that I use for certification. The variation was significant (don't remember the percentages) and the magazine considered the Mustang more accurate in terms of real-world results from hp. The DynoJet will read higher and this would make competitors unhappy. ...Mustang cannot be used even in "DynoJet Emulation Mode" or whatever it is called.

There is no DynoJet in your area? Here's the Maryland list from DynoJet's website:

http://www.dynojet.com/maps/autodynos/md.htm

4 of them are in Baltimore, and several more in the neighboring 'burbs.

Plain and simple, it has to be a DynoJet. Read the rules.

I've been doing CMC and now AI dynos for almost 10 years now.

First in NorCal and now in Texas.

It has always been SAE on a Dynojet 248.

I have consistently been within 2-3 HP from year to year, dyno to dyno.

During yesterday's dyno day, I was first up on the rollers and pulled almost 12HP more than normal (and more than the CMC limit).

After all the hoops and hollars and laughter subsided, I asked the shop owner which scale he was in. The light went on and he realized he "made a mistake" and was not in SAE mode.

My understanding is that all the proper enviromental corrections take place in SAE mode, not in STD.

For the dyno operator to not record in SAE, would be an error on their part IMO. However, The comment that "SAE mode" should be in the rules is duly noted.

I bet there are at least 5 within 30 minutes of you. I can take you to 2 in Glen Burnie. That's not all that far from Baltimore.

Great. If you could give me the names of the GB ones that would be appreciated.

The list on the DynoJet site is out of date, as Anderson's is the wrong model, Dynamo sold theirs, and Dynotune has closed (or has no known phone listing). Eastside on Pulaski Hway has one and gets $125 for a pull (yikes). I don't consider Frederick, Gaithersburg, Westminster, Odenten, Aberdeen or Damascus that close to Baltimore (Towson) although I may have to see what they charge even if it means taking a day of vacation to do it.

What kind of dyno does NASA have at the track? I've seen dynos that are not "dynojet 248" at some events. Does the dyno done at those events even count?

I've been to both. The owner of Flowers (Jason) use to work for the owner of Heffners (Jason) when he worked on mustangs.
