20 Heat Cycled R888?

NOT!

First off, I would like to apologize to everyone for bragging about how I was able to get 16+ out of them and still have PLENTY of grip. While the tire still had tread, still had grip, still seemed to have more life in them, I guess they didn't. I picked up almost 1.5 seconds switching to a new set and had a car that was more controllable, predictable and more competitive than it was the previous day. I am sure everyone already knew this info about the tire, but I am new to the R888 and never ran on the RA1 so I had nothing but my own new experiences to compare them to.

Now lets get those 205/50-15 RA-1's approved for competition so we can get down to business.

I think you have found out what many of us have found as well. There are some that believe they are only getting 12 cycles before the lap times start going down. At this point, I am inclined to agree more with 12 cycles than 20, from my own experience.

One of the problems is that weather and track conditions change from day to day, sometimes, and from event to event. That makes comparing more difficult. I know that a cooler (not cold) day will give the car lots more power and better grip. Unless, of course, the track is too cold, that is. The only real answer is to test in back to back sessions with various heat cycled tires and we have never done that.

I agree that we need to do something else about tires unless Toyo can improve the life of the 888. What that is remains to be seen as we await Toyo's next move. For my money, if Toyo does not do something soon, we will need to be thinking about our next move so we have time to test and compare some tires. The time to try to do that is at the Nationals, of course. There will be lots of guys there that can do some back to back to back testing of different tires. Of course, that won't give us a heat cycle answer but it will give us a start and we map out some heat cycle test plans for the several top choices.

At the end of the day, it is our class, our money and our cars and we don't want to run out of time as the end of the year comes closer.

SCCA Spec Miata, in coordination with Toyo, is going back to the RA-1 for 2010. http://www.scca.com/newsarticle.aspx?hub=1&news=3661" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I hope NASA spec classes follow suit.

This has been discussed and we are trying to push the 205/50-15 for us as well.

Let's see what happens with the 225/50/15 in the RA-1 model. Maybe Toyo will restart production of that size as well.

I've read about going to a 205mm wide tire. It's a possibility but let's see what happens with the 225 first?

Tim, the problem with Toyo restarting production on that size is simply an issue of volume. I don't think that Toyo is going to produce anything other than the 205's but, I have been wrong before. I personally am excited about the opportunity to run the 205/50-15, we will see what happens.
