tethering an aiptek

Anyone using an aiptek want to show how they tethered it?

Thanks,

Hints on keeping the thing recording would be good as well. We stuffed padding in w/the battery but it still shuts off on the pace lap or 1 or 2 laps in.

Also, is there a hint on settings so it's not a blurry mess?

Couple of things...

1. I had to put a couple layers of racers tape at the bottom of the battery compartment to keep the battery seated.

2. Don't shut the view screen, rather, once recording, turn it so it faces outwards from the camera (for whatever reason closing the view screen shuts off the camera )

3. Set the camera resolution to 720P at 30FPS - this minimizes the jitter.

4. Tape over the macro switch on the right side of the lens. I cannot count the number of videos I lost because the camera was accidentally switched to 4" focus while putting it in the car.

5. Tether can be done in a number of ways. I use the lens cap mount as my securing point, then loop it around the bar.

You can see video from my setup here: http://www.wasabiraceteam.com/gallery.html. Scroll down to the video section.

Hope this helps.

i tether with the arm strap then tape the whole thing one layer.

I wedged a very small piece of plastic around the battery to keep it from moving, and have had no problems since with the camera shutting off.

I run at 720x60fps. I simply use the wrist strap and slide it down around the camera body and over two of the hinges of the IOPort mount.

I just used the wrist strap tied around my mount.

As for the battery, a gas station receipt folded a couple of times has worked perfectly for me so far.

I put a drop of hot glue on the macro-focus switch. It wont move now, but it's still easily removable when I need to take any close-up pictures.

To prevent or fix a wobbly picture, remove the battery, tighten the 4 tiny screws in there, then look at the bottom of the camera and find the seam where the two halves of the case shell meet. Put a few drops of super glue along there, but be careful not to glue your SD card door.

I record at 720p30. The 60 FPS mode worked fine, but the picture was a little darker due to reduced exposure time, and 30 FPS is all you need anyway.

I am very happy with the video quality, and no jitters. I am using the I/O port mount, no tape receipts etc. I do use the larger battery and cover though. I reach in and turn it on, start recording before I get into the car. +1 on not closing the display flap, it shuts it off, if you close it enough, it shuts off the display, but not the cam, saving battery. I just need to tether it; I have no wrist strap so I'll have to find one.

Here is some video:

I am using an aiptek HD, recording in 720, 60fps, with a wide angle lens adaptor. It is crooked in this vid, but is straight now!

Hi D,

I tried to watch your video on Vimeo but it says that it is a private video that I do not have permission to watch.

Be aware the tether is going to be required as the way the camera mounts at the bottom and has no real bracing for the cornering forces. My camera broke itself off of the mount while a Buttonwillow. Luckily I had used the wrist strap to attach to the I/O Port mount.

The threaded section is still attached to the mount along with some of the plastic from the base and the camera has a hole in the bottom where the mount should be !

I'll try and get pictures later.

Where did you find the wide angle lens? Is it one of those magnetic deals?

overstock.com I think, yes it is magnetic. I used gorilla tape to secure it to the camera body.

I have a similar setup. I bought my wide angle lens at Best Buy. It came with a bunch of different threaded adapters but there are no threads on the lens of the Aiptek. So I epoxied one of the adapters to the face of the lens housing and now I can remove the wide angle whenever I want.
