mpowers Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Since you get to take off points for tires if they are under X width per class, can you effectively drop to the next class down? Quote
Trevor57 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 I think you can, but it is likely that you may be over the hp/weight rules in many cars. Quote
Gators2001 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 interesting strategy... but u will be on thinner street tires then stock? Quote
kbrew8991 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 but u will be on thinner street tires then stock? not nessecarily - remember, its that given width by your base class now, no matter what your car comes with Mike - I've competed against a '01 Miata (TTE base class, no stars) at Nationals... in TTF... so Quote

phoenixR34 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 An early 350Z could fit into TTD technically, as it uses 245 tires (stock) and makes it on HP/WT. Doubtful it would be very competitive, however. The Integra Type R is another example, and one that has a chance of being competitive in TTE due to getting a lot of points back if running on 195 or 205 width tires. Quote

mpowers Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 what class are you planning on? D or E......I don't want to do a lot to the car to tt. Quote
phoenixR34 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Yeah, sure. That's what everyone says.. "I'm gonna keep this one cheap!" lol Quote
Varkwso Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Yeah, sure. That's what everyone says.. "I'm gonna keep this one cheap!" lol cheap is not his middle name.... Quote

KTL Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Seems to me your choice of car has to be one that is clearly competitive in relatively stock form for this to "downclass" to benefit you. Dropping down a class by shrinking your tires (and potentially adding weight to also acheive a downclass) is going to be a huge penalty on an already challenged car. However a stock competitive car could survive this "downgrade" But I think the choice of class shouldn't always be your ultimate goal. You should position your car in a class that gives you the best chance to compete & win. If that requires massive modifications to your car, well then maybe you don't have the right car! Point being is, let's say your base is C. If you tweak your car to fit in D and nobody's running in D? Who cares, you don't accomplish anything. However if there's a number of people running in C and you can be competitive in C, or only a few running in B and you can hold your own in B, you'd be better off running your C base class or bumping yourself up to B in my opinion. kbrew8991 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 a car like, say, a '99 Miata (TTE base class) can run stock size-ish 205 tires and still have 6pts to spend and be in TTF still. Heck you could run a 195 street tire (esp one that might be physically as wide as most other 205s) and it would leave you even more room to modify things. It'd be a tough car in TTF imho, and one just like it has podiumed Nationally if you had a lighter car that had a high base class you could take that type example pretty extreme and maybe even run two classes below your base almost, something like a Lotus Elise comes to mind.... getfast Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 I might know what this potential downclassed car is... I think it's blue. Not sure about using skinnier tires though, what I'm thinking of isn't particularly light (or easy on front tires in stock form.) Also, just doing some rough math based on a reasonable estimate of car + driver weight and approximate whp for a totally stock one, it's gonna be tough to get under the minimum power-to-weight for the lower class. Very interesting idea though! Quote
