cbuzz Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Hey guys, trying to get a list of spares we are all bringing to the Nats. We undoubtedly will have some breakdowns and fender benders and it would be great if no one goes home early. I won't be able to post my list for a week or so but wanted to get this started. Quote
Big Dog Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Spare engine Trans. Shocks All four corners of suspension for all three versions of the car Front fenders Valence Perhaps the solution is to review the original spares list that Joe put together and add new items to it, such as the above, that would not normally be part of a weekend list of spares. cbuzz Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 Oh good I was hoping someone was bringing an engine. I planned on doing a swap at the track between sessions just to stay in practice Off the top of my head I know I have (rebuilt) alu A arms for an 85.5. Distributor cap and rotor, plugs and wires. Rebuilt water pump brake pads Used and turned brake rotors (front) used front calipers (and rebuild kits for fronts and rears) starter Alternator DME 85.5 DME relay Water temp sender Oil pressure sender Nut and bolt selection Will post more later Quote
944cer Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 (edited) I'll bring an early head and gaskets. Ran into an odd circumstance this weekend...needed an oil filter after the oil cooler ruptured out of the blue and consequently dented the oil filter trying remove the sandwich plate. One other item is chem dry. I think Dave Wright can attest to that given MMP's strict enforcement of any spills or leaks. Edited July 14, 2009 by Guest Quote
dmdirks Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Few more things to add... Radiator Fuel pump Battery Early and late OPRV's and alignment tools Quote
Big Dog Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 There is an extensive list already started by Joe. Look there and only add things that are not on that list here. Joe can then add these items to that list to keep it growing. It is a GREAT resource for everyone and for regions to try to team up on to share some of the responsibility of having spares at a race weekend. Jim Quote
Spec944 #143 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I have a spare transmission in my garage. it will be available if anyone needs it. it is an open dif and tall fifth but it is better than going home. by the way my house is 35 minutes from the track Quote
Big Dog Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 OK, 944 racers - Crash pad at Todd's Toga party Wednesday evening. Thanks for the offer, Todd. Big Dog Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I have an extensive spares list, but given the number of cars we have and the nature of this event I advise bringing all the spares you want. There will be duplicates, but that is ok. Some part we may need a couple of. I have 3 parts cars and already carry a ton of spares (ok maybe just a 1000lbs of spares) Once I get my spares together I will have an updated list as what I bring depends on what I have laying around and what I can stuff in my trailer and truck. Some of my spares are "emergency" only like an old worn rubber center clutch disk. I have one laying around that is in my parts bin that will proabably get someone through the weekend if they are in a bind. Same for my worn head with two leaky valves. I ran this head last year and will bring it just in case. Heck I would rather run around in the main event off the pace a bit vs not being able to run. I could freshen this head, but don't have the $$ right now so I will have to wait. Heck I might get away with trying to soak the valves since I think it just build up causing the leaks. Also one key is if you bring a spare consider also the tools needed to replace that spare. I won't bring a spare engine unless I have a hoist to swap the motor. One thing I do thing we need is an air compressor capable of running air tools mostly a 1/2 drive impact gun. This is key took for getting off stick bolts especially the crank bolt. I have an impact gun I can bring, but have no plans to haul my 30 gallon compressor. Quote

Since there is air in the garages, and since I have a garage as does the group, all we would need would be enough hose to reach our area. Quote
rlofgren Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 i managed to do an engine swap without using an engine hoist. it was definitely helped by the fact that my replacement engine came with it's own subframe, so i just moved the old one out on a furniture dolly, and moved the new one in the same way. i suppose bringing a spare engine still mounted on a subframe wouldn't take up much more space than the engine by itself, but how do you get something like that in and out of the truck without the hoist? a hundred little green men? Spec944 #143 Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Jim if you can survive my wife's attack- party on. normally would I have something at my house but with my wife will be 8-9 months pregnant in September I am just hoping my daughter is patient. I have access to an engine hoist so if someone wants to do an engine swap I bet we get one to use- we can bride aaron with beer. Quote
Big Dog Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Todd, I remember now. You were not sure about being able to race because of your new girl. I hope she does wait it out and I have NO intention of tempting fate with your wife. I guess we will have the Toga party at the track. We need photos of that for sure. My trailer has a lift for a second car. I have used the lift in my garage to hoist engines out and in from the top. I have cut off the hood latch. That does require dropping the trans to allow the torque tube to slide back. With the lift and some guys, I am sure we can do it without a hoist but having a hoist would be easier. I hope to bring a spare engine as well but don't know for sure yet. Big Dog Quote
