drivinhardz06 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I am looking to unclutter under the hood for easier working room, and was wondering if removing the electric A.I.R. pump (and lines) on a C5Z06 (TTA car) is legal? The pump is there to promote cat light off on cold starts. Total weight of the pump and hoses/lines is likely 5-10 lb. Quote
Cobra4B Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Can't answer your question as far as legality for TTA, but I can tell you it's so nice to have it gone. I blew an AIR tube off of a header years ago at VIR. I replaced the headers w/ the race versions (no air provisions at all) and remove the whole setup. So much nicer working on the plugs/exhaust now and no downside. You will have to get a tune to turn off the various codes taht will pop up w/ it removed. FYI you'll have to remove the intake manifold to get the the one bolt on the rear of the driver's side head and there's a vaccum line that goes to the air pump at the front of the car. You can simply cap this off.... no need to trace it back to the massive vaccum T intersection under the passenger fender. HTH, Brian Quote
kbrew8991 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 is the pump driven by a belt off the engine, or is it an underhood component similar to say a washer bottle? Quote
Cobra4B Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 It's an electric pump under the front bumper cover that injects fresh air into the exhaust manifold at startup to help the cat fire off quicker for cold-start emissions... that's all it does. Quote
kbrew8991 Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 hmm, I wonder if you'd be dinged for "modifying" the exhaust by removing that line? Sounds like the other stuff is "non-essential equipment" and weight reduction though. There are quite a few emissions equipment things that fall along the same lines - EGR comes to mind. If you remove that sytem and block off the opening, is that "modifying" the component, or just removing a non-essential item?? just my opinion, wonder what Greg thinks... Quote
drivinhardz06 Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 technically I can unplug it and tune it out with HPtuners and it's "gone" anyway. This would just be physically removing it. No real performance advantage with it on or off. Like Brian said, just makes it easy to get to plugs and general maint. under the hood. And knock a couple of lbs off the nose. here's a so-so pic of the driver's side line and inlet. http://www.malachiarts.org/~mathia/pics/vette/steering-sensor/air-tube-disconnect-s.jpg Quote
Cobra4B Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Having done this... it's most definately non-essential equipment. It doesn't affect the exhaust flow/horsepower in any way shape or form. When removed you install blockoff plates on the stock maniolds (or aftermarket headers) or you get headers with no air provisions at all. This is the air pump assembly located under the front bumper on the crash bar It has a supply line that pulls air in from the intake so it gets filtered air (aftermarket intake shown) Then a line comes off and runs up the driver's side frame rail to a metal T line. The line hooks up to the driver's side manifold then the other part wraps aroudn the back of the motor to the passenger side.... passenger side line removed A schematic of the driver's side Quote
mrc24x Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 When I added Headers I removed mine. Here's the line in weight reduction that I believe applies.... WEIGHT REDUCTION: Weight reduction points are based on the actual vehicle minimum competition weight (with driver). Removal and lightening of non-essential parts is permitted unless stated otherwise in these rules. Modification of the OEM frame, sub-frame, and floor pan are not permitted (see 6.3.2). Removal or lightening of engine parts is permitted only as listed elsewhere in these rules: Quote
Varkwso Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 I put it under the weight reduction category...and it takes weight off the part of the car that needs a little help.... It takes a C5 knowledgeable guy to even find one on the car.... Quote
yakisoba Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Can you reroute the output of this to your front brakes? Quote
Cobra4B Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 You're joking right? It's a tiny air pump that only works for a second at startup. A car at speed will flow far more air through the brake ducts. Quote
