schwank Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 So I've broken two exhaust systems in two weeks at the track. They break in the same place... right at the inlet to the muffler. Don't know the actual cause just yet but will be checking motor mounts this week. Those are pretty much the only rubber left in the car. Perhaps with the solid trans mount the rubber motor mounts can't take it and somehow put the force into the exhaust system. It seems I am not the only one to suffer breaks at this spot. Anyway, my crew chief and I were pondering the options. We could gusset between the pipe and the muffler to strengthen that joint. That might work, or it might force it to break somewhere else in the chain. Our other idea is to get a bullet muffler like the one linked below and mount it amidships where the factory cat was located. This would put it between two hangars, and then we would simply run bent pipe back to exit at the normal location. I am nowhere near sound limits even with my test pipe & magnaflow that I have been running for the last two years. Is there any reason this bullet muffler idea would not work for race track use? John Milne Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I have run a bullet style straight through muffler on my race car in the cat location for several years. I have had no problems and that location is very secure with hangers to hold the muffler. I also run a Super Trapp at the end of my tail pipe. The Super Trapp is very light and puts little stress on the system. The Super Trapp gives some ability to tune your exhaust and quiets the exhaust slightly. My car is really loud. The bullet muffler is basically straight through and as the packing material wears it basically becomes a straight pipe. The Super Trap with 17 baffles quiets the car to a reasonable but still loud level. If you are concerned about sound you may need to purchase a muffler that will fit in place of the cat, but also reduce the exhaust noise better than most bullet mufflers. My experience with this arrangement has been positive. John Quote
