L98Terror Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 what is it going to be like 3-4 laps for the fast cars and 2-3 laps for the slower groups? I figure 8 minutes to get all the cars off grid and for the pace lap and 6 minutes for the cool down lap that's leaves about 6 minutes to race Sound about right?
dahl460 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Race time shouldn't start until you take the green flag and it ends when time is up, that's the way it is with every other group I race with.
kbrew8991 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 welcome to NASA and the way every group east of El Paso, TX does things 20min races at VIR Full (3.27mi) are still quite a few laps - I bet that pace car will be scooting for most of the warmup lap too just so that doesn't take up alot of time
944-Spec#94 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Expect a fast warm up lap. The things slow down at Tooele corner. For the cool down lap just stay on it till the Attitidues. If you back off before then it is a long cool down lap. Still plenty of racing can get done.
L98Terror Posted August 19, 2009 Author Posted August 19, 2009 Race time shouldn't start until you take the green flag and it ends when time is up, that's the way it is with every other group I race with. The time starts when the pace car pulls onto the track and it ends when the last car pulls in. Just as a reference 2008 National Championship Qualifying Races were 20 minuts on a 2.2 mile track and Spec Miata did 4 laps and SU/ST class got in 6 laps & I now laps take about 30 seconds longer at Miller in an ST1 car so I might be close.
Weston Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 Last year, we had a regional event where the pace lap was about 9/10ths until the last corner before the straight. Despite qualifying mid-pack and having a messed up engine, pretty much nobody was visible in my mirrors when the green flag dropped. In fact, I was still on it and just trying to catch up when the green dropped, so I just stayed on it and ran down most of the field by Turn 1. Hopefully we wont repeat that and will slow down and get organized at the Tooele turn, and let everyone know exactly what to expect...
ST#97 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 We aren't running the 4.5...the warm/cool times you quoted are snail's pace. At TWS which is a 2.9 mile course and slightly faster than MMP, our 20 minute races, 13 minutes 15seconds of actual race time for the AI winner netted 6 race laps. 25 minute race netted 9 laps. I would offer that if a race group has stragglers doing 30 mph on a cool down lap...it gets taken off their next qual session to get things on schedule.

No need to offer. It's all taken into account by control. We keep good notes on those that take more time.
