Members Eric W. Posted August 24, 2009 Members Posted August 24, 2009 We had over 20 cars this weekend at Summit Point despite forecasts of some nasty weather! When we rolled in Friday, the lower half of the paddock was COMPLETELY flooded. It certainly made for some interesting trailer maneuvering. Word was a Subaru tried to go through it, stopped, looked out the window, and hydrolocked Thanks to VBD, RRT, and Brakeswap.com we had a Saturday night afterparty with plenty of beverages to go around! GTS 2 Wow, great race. Greg Shaffer qualified the pole for Saturday's race, but had car issues with his GTS4 car and would not make it out for this race. Scott Bresnahan took an early lead over Jeff Emanuelson and looked like he was in for the win. Especially since new to GTS2, Nick Rubenstein, in a E46 3-series started battling Jeff. However, it started to rain and Jeff was the only one with wets on. He would eventually reduce Scott's gap, but it did not rain enough for him to take advantage of running the race on wet tires. Sunday Greg Shaffer makes it back out to battle Scott again who qualified on the pole. After a few laps of very close bumper to bumper action, a slight bobble by Scott would allow Greg by. Greg started to gap the GTS2 field, but rear end issues would retire the car early. Scott took over the lead, but Jeff Emanuelson came back to win by 0.303! GTS3 Sat: With a nice, dry qualifying session, Eric Wong took the pole by a nice margin. However, with rain quickly approaching, this would probably mean nothing. The start of the race was good, but Eric would not be able to hold off Jeff Curtis and Bob Turgeon who were applying lots of pressure. However, out of nowhere, Joe Elwell (from California where it never rains?) comes flying through the field and quickly commanded the lead. Bob would eventually make it around Jeff to take 2nd place. Nathan Beck in an AWD VW R32 was probably most happy to see the rain but got held up in some traffic and finished 5th. Tom Dymant finished 6th. With fast laptimes of the top drivers all within a couple tenths, it was some real close racing. Sun: DRY! Eric started the race well keeping up with Max Fischer's GTS4 M3 for a while. Turns out Max Factor forgot to turn his traction control off! Eric built up a relatively large lead but had it all evaporate due to a full course caution situation. Especially since Jeff and Bob were duking it out. With not much time left in the race, any green would be a short sprint to the finish. Eric timed the restart well, but traffic would prove interesting. Jeff Curtis would get by to grab the lead, but a daring move in the 2nd to last lap would catapult him through the grass, over a curb and into the lead. Eric tried to time a last minute pass, but it did not work and Bob held onto the win by a 0.182 sec margin. GTS4 Sat: So what separates the men from the boys? Derek Schwarz deciding to race on slicks, in the rain, with no ABS, and no traction control aids of any kind. After telling his wife he was only going to be out there for a lap, Derek had way too much fun and stayed out for 6 full laps!!! Of course he was no match for the other GTS4 cars who were on full rain setups. Max had been doing the rain dance all morning and his prayers were answered. He assumed the lead and never looked back. Steele Alphin recently added power and moved up from GTS3, but the power was fruitless in the wet and he would end up 2nd. Fred Dow would complete your top 3. Sun: Completely dry track would put Derek in the front. Max finished 2nd, Steele 3rd and Fred 4th. Fresh from comp school was Bill Gould in a super nice E46 M3. He finished 5th. GTS5/U The Sat rain would put the awesome Soykher Porsches at bay with Gilbert Galle winning GTS5 in the wet. Sunday, the Soykher cars would dominate GTS5 and GTSU with Gennady turning the fastest lap in the Thunder group. Upcoming Races OktoberFAST is quickly approaching. To be held at VIR, it should definitely be a good season closing event. There will be triple races with two on Sat for points and an hour long fun race on Sunday. Dont miss out! streak Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Sadly I could only spectate this weekend. Happily I got to watch the Saturday sprints. Jeff Curtis and a black 993 had one hell of a fight in the rain. Great stuff to watch. On the last lap they threaded two lapped cars between 7/8 that had the stands cheering and gasping, Then Jeff ducked inside 9 and put his fender next to the 993's door until we lost site of them at the crest. Really wish I'd been sitting outside t10 for that one. Good stuff And Todd Reid. That guy has a horseshoe up his a**! He gambled on worn RA1's and becuase he's Todd, the rain stopped just for him. Then his competition overcooked it and off he went leaving Todd nothing to do but bring home another win! Scott chose to stay on Hoos and ran away with the Autobahn sprint. Watching is fun but I'm itching to get to VIR Quote
bobt993 Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 I should clean my car more often, it's actually dark blue. Somehow Jeff and I managed to get through the carousel 3 wide with a lapped car stuck between us. As we came on the front straight, I saw him sliding behind me in a big tank slapper (nice save Jeff!!!). Another lap and it would have a 3 car push for 1st place as the bimmer was just in front of us at the checker. I set fast during our altercation and Jeff set is best lap also (can't figure that one out) We both were pretty determined. It only got worse on Sunday!!! Quote
good hands Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 A lot of fun both days for me. I too gambled with the R6's on Saturday and the rain held off for the first 7 laps. Jeff Emanuelson decided to go with rains and I was able to take an insurmountable lead. Jeff started reeling me in when the rain started but I just had too much of lead by that point. On Sunday I had a great race with Greg going until he broke . Once again i thought I had a huge lead but my brakes boiled and my car didn't want to go into 2nd gear. Jeff slowly reeled me in again and on the last lap of the race I locked them up in turn 6 and he went inside on me. We went around side by side in the carrousel and by turn 9 he had the better line and beat me to the finish . Great racing . Quote
