rhart Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 A Spec E30 owner is suggesting that because of the crunch room available over a tight Spec Miata it could be safer. Since cages bend in a bad one this seems to make sense. Any opinions? Quote
kbrew8991 Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 SpecE30 is a much larger cabin if that is your biggest concern Quote
rhart Posted December 16, 2009 Author Posted December 16, 2009 The concern is safety. Miata vs E30. Little cockpit with little room vs large cockpit with lots of room. Which is GENERALLY safer? A cage 1" from you head or a cage 8" from your head?? Quote
National Staff Greg G. Posted December 16, 2009 National Staff Posted December 16, 2009 It depends how hard your head is, and whether you would rather hit it against a hard piece of metal, or let your belts and head and neck restraint catch you. FYI, in a seriously violent crash, metal gets bent, seats get bent/broken, belts stretch, and the driver can move more than a few inches regardless of his safety gear. The Bimmer is bigger and a few hundred pounds heavier. So, there is more room for metal intrusion in a crash before it gets to the driver. However, there are hundreds and hundreds of Spec Miata drivers out there that are doing just fine, and a few that have walked away from some pretty big rollovers. Quote
DrewC Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Is it fair to say that SM is more accident prone as well? Quote
kbrew8991 Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 depends on the region, club, and so forth. There are some that caused SM to earn the nickname "Wreck Pinata", and some that are good enough they should reverse that reputation. Its all about where you are, the participant attitudes, the officials attuitudes, and so on. Quote
Izzy's Cages Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Which is safer, jumping out of a plane or base jumping off of a cliff? You're still jumping... I'll say one thing though, you don't want to second guess your safety gear after pulling the ripcord Hopefully you have the best safety equipment you can buy regardless of where you are jumping.
