V8cobra99
If I remove the mufflers and go straight pipe from the Cats back, how might this affect engine / HP/TQ performance ?? I want to remove that weight for one, and possibly increase HP/TQ if possible. Thanks!!
Members Jim P.
I would suggest that if you do that - aim them out the passenger side - we have a few tracks on the East Coast that are starting to check noise levels -
trackboss
I once dynoed straight pipes in place of borla XR-1 mufflers and the difference was 1hp.
Members Jim P.
A good friend of mine, David Vizard, has written a few books on the subject of mufflers and how you can actually increase hp/tq with them - it would be hard to convince me that louder is better
turbolx
Typically, you will see slightly more top end power (depending on what muffler/catback you are removing) with a drop in low-midrange torque. Ditto on the "louder ain't always better" theory here. Unless you have all kinds of nasty excess midrange torque with no pull upstairs, I wouldn't suggest it. V8cobra99
Thanks guys !!!! My general goal was to lose the muffler weight, really. It was my understanding that WC cars and similar (DTM, V8 Supercars, etc...) did not run mufflers. But my car runs great now with them and I am about 10 to 1 on both HP and Tq, for AI. I guess I will call it good.....
trackboss
I'd remove them. Good bit of weight savings, less stuff under there when you are working on the car and it sounds better for the those watching.
RichardP
The cool thing about a really loud exhaust is that everyone in the stands (not to mention your competitors) knows where you shift. They also know every time you miss a shift. And every time you botch a heel/toe down shift. And they are going to call BS when you say that you are flat out through a section because they all heard you lift... I prefer quiet myself. racercosmo
I would suggest that you have the pipes towards the driver side of the car. Sears Point and Laguna get sound readings from the driver's right. Also make it so you can add mufflers if necessary.
