GPS at nats

didn't want to hijack the schedule thread this came out of, but was curious about this:

In the background and not even on the competitor schedule, there is also time we need to set aside for impound dynos, evaluation of GPS data, meetings, etc.

per the 2010 rules

NASA is actively conducting research on the use of in-car GPS monitoring units as an alternate

method of compliance testing of horsepower output. It is possible that GPS monitoring will be

used at the 2010 NASA Championships, and that vehicles found to be out of compliance will be

penalized without Dyno testing, based on the results of the GPS on-track monitoring. If NASA

elects to begin compliance testing with GPS units, competitors will be given adequate notice

prior to their use, including details of the units to be used, so that they may do their own testing if

desired.

so if we are using it, what will be used? traqmate?

We just had some GPS testing performed by a NASA official at Sebring during a recent FL region event. I hope it provides useful data

I don't mind the GPS stuff, I am just curious what will be used.

Traqmate is a great tool, I spend many nerd hours pouring over the data, but it's hp calculator is a joke IMHO. I will gladly post every TM session I've ever recorded, the hp is never the same, and it's probably got an 80 hp swing. me and jason dyno within 2 or 3 hp of each other on a dynojet (last time I did my 3 pulls, all were within .5 of a hp) if you look at the GPS speed data between our 2 cars, it's more or less the same mph at the end of the straights, but the hp numbers are all over the place.

My car was one of the three that carried the GPS device at Sebring a week or so ago, and I'll be putting the car back on the dyno soon in as-raced condition to compare what the Dynojet says to what the GPS says (although I have only removed weak "speed parts" from the car since it was last on the dyno in June 2009, so I know roughly where it should be within 5 rwhp).
