WEight Weight Weight!

Recommended Posts

Yes, I'm lazy so I'm asking rather than searching. Very little time available with all the projects.

How many gallons in the larger 88 tank? How many pounds per gallon?

And I cut off the bottom of my dash, removed the wipers (motor/arms etc), remaining drivers seatbelt and all I got out was 28 pounds. I come in at 2700+. So I need to calculate how much of that is gas weight?

Thanks,

P.Dilly.

My Lazy Friend,

The answer is 21 gallons at 5.8 to 6.5 lbs per gallon or about 125 lbs.

Late tank = 21.1 gallons

Early tank= 17.4 gallons.

You can start a 30-35 minute sprint race with about 1/4 tank and finish near empty.

I don't think removing the wiper motors are all that good. What happens if it rains?

Yes it even rains in Az a few times a year.

2700 lbs. Is that with you in the car our not in the car?

So have you removed the following.

Sunroof head liner

Sunroof motor

Rear hatch motor

Charcol canister in left front fender

Power steering pump

heat shielding between engine and firewall.

headlight motors and bars (can rig up manual lights if needed for the street)

Smaller battery

complete climate control system

Can you take some detailed photos of the inside of your car so we can see what is left?

If you are at 2700 with driver there is still weight to be lost somewhere.

Remember I have to add ballast just to make weight and I know you are not a "Large driver".

It was about exact on 2700 if I took off about 30 pounds for extra gas, assumming my guage is correct. Or, 2700 pounds now that I took out the wipers, dash and charcoal canister (that was the 3rd thing I couldn't think of).

So have you removed the following.

Sunroof head liner - CHECK

Sunroof motor - CHECK

Rear hatch motor - CHECK

Charcol canister in left front fender - CHECK

Power steering pump - CHECK

heat shielding between engine and firewall. - CHECK

headlight motors and bars (can rig up manual lights if needed for the street) - LEFT IN SO i CAN FLASH PEOPLE WHO GET IN THE WAY. ALTHOUGH DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK IN SEPTEMBER

Smaller battery - CHECK

complete climate control system - CHECK

The car is bare bones. Except inside door metal but I don't think there is much in that? Remember it's an 88 and I think according to POC rankings the 88 started off slightly heavy. Then I think this car has had about 20 coats of paint. It's been gold, blue, bronze, grey, yellow with half black. I think that's where the weight is?

I think with what I just pulled about 28 pounds, the car was at 2727 with half tank, so take out 30 for gas running it very low for the race. I gues that would bring me in at 40 pounds over, although I'm about to add back the stock mirrirs which seem to weigh about 10 pounds?

I guess it is what it is.

I think the 88 model in stock form is heavier due to soundproofing interior items. Not based on chassis weight. In many series there forced to run heavier to offset the apparent hp increase.

Also make sure you gut the inside of mirrors. You don't need them powered. It will save you a few lbs.

I guess keep on looking at anything that does not make the car go. Figure out some way to remove it. It all adds up. It might be good to look for a manual steering rack. These save maybe 10-15 lbs given you don't need the pump reservior, cooler and the rack itself is lighter. To use on your car you will need to use your tie rods to match it to the right offset.

You may also want to rethink the lights. I bet you could rig up a light weight system to rotate the lights to up postion and manually fix the in place. Ditching the big bar and motor are probably 10 lbs. Also ditch the plasic around the lights. 1/2 lbs right there. You can also trace the accessories harness. What are you not using anymore. Cut them out. Just becarefull not cut something you need.

What about gooey crap on the inside of the foor pan. That stuff is hard work, but maybe anther 5 lbs.

I assume the power windows are out? If not there is some weight. I know chas W. run lexan window to lower weight and keep it sealed when needed. If they aready out then good.

PS.. you could have 5 -10 lbs of paint on the car. Paint does have some weight.

Best of luck on the weight removal. I know my car has also always been heavier than most, as has Glenn's. Joe always trots out his "I have to add ballast" statement whenever weight is mentioned, but I have always suspected that the later (85.5 on) cars were somewhat heavier than the early ones. I removed everything from mine including the headlights, heater core, window motors and glass, ac components, sound deadening inside, etc.. and still end up heavier. I did leave the power steering system in, but again, that can't be all of it.

I am a "larger" driver, so that impacts it some, but doens't explain all. Chris Cervelli also seemed to believe that the later cars were heavier to begin with, but I don't think he ever stated to me exactly what he thought it was.

there must be something with the later cars....I have full size battery and some of the sound deadening still in place and weigh around 2450. I DON"T have the LSD and 5TH GEAR however...the LSD is out of the car AND it's heavy!

The gas tanks are bigger...that is one difference for sure

I had a rude awakening this weekend. I came in post race at 2603 pounds. Say what!!! you say? I don't get it, the car was measured at 2727 prior to the weekend with I thought less than half a tank of gas (according to the guage which could be way out). I took out approx. 27 pounds so figured it was 2700 pounds for the start of the race. What a shock to come in just 3 pounds over weight at almost empty! Guess I can stop looking for things to remove.

I feel like a jack-a$$ for constantly saying/thinking I was over weight? Guess that just means I'm not I fast as I think!

P. Silly,

All's well that ends well......

It did serve as a lesson for weight reduction to the newer guys though.

I give you tips on ballast too! Seems like you may want a few lbs just be sure. 3lbs aint alot of margin.

Dilly,

Keep checking it. Scales will vary as much as +/- 5% (20lbs) throughout the day at some kart tracks. I gotta think car scales are the same.....

dude, 3lbs! You didn't tell me that! That healthy pre-race s#*t would have put you under the mark.....
