davecarama Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 I am so new to these rules... but anything you can do to help me "get it" would be appreciated. -Are body mods for Air Intake purposes legal with 0 points? (In other words, can I pull off body panels, lights, etc?) It looks like the LIGHTS can be removed, but no mention of the body parts... Does that mean I can remove my turn signals too? When they say lights are they talking about "bulbs" or the exterior facing "lenses" too? I didn't see anything in the rules about that, and I know it sounds silly. I drive a Miata. Can I remove the aluminum headlight covers too (leaving a gaping hole that leads directly to my intake)? Are points applied for such a modification? -Glass mods for aero. I hear my car handles fantastic with the windshield and hard top rear window removed. The rules say "Removal of the front windshield/windshield frame +7". Does that mean removal of the window AND frame equals +7 or the removal of any mentioned parts = +7? It also doesn't mention REAR glass... can I remove the rear glass with no penalties? (can I remove just the windows and leave the frame for less than 7 points? Can I replace the windows with a modified glass or lexan for 0 points?) Sorry for the stupid questions! Dave Quote
Vinny Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Dave, To my understanding any thing you do to improve airflow to the engine bay goes under the "intake mod" points. It's actually covered in the rulebook. Edit: 13) Modification of the OEM air intake/box, air filter location, air piping to the turbo/ supercharger/intercooler/throttle body/carburetor, or hood/fascia/fender air inlet(s), outlets, or vents +1 (air filter upgrade alone—0 pts.) and 25) Brake duct addition or modification, including electric fans (water sprayers are illegal). Two holes may be cut or drilled out of the front fascia for brake air ducts. Any hole providing improved intake air to the engine will be assessed one (1) point under Engine 13). As for your window questions, yes they all would be 7 point mods. IMO i wouldn't remove any window in a miata. Why would you want a direct path of rocks and all other track debris to your head? Meh, no thanks. Quote
dbgeek Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Why would you want a direct path of rocks and all other track debris to your head? Meh, no thanks. Given what my windshield goes through during a track weekend, I agree with Vinny. Quote
kbrew8991 Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 guess you've never seen some SCCA Production cars - its alot more common than you think on a very heavily modified car for a highly modified class to chop the top off, have a roll hoop, and maybe a small wind deflector. You'd wear a closed face helmet of course. Some people really like 'em, I wouldn't drive one, but... Quote
nasaregistrar Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 I hear my car handles fantastic with the windshield and hard top rear window removed. Dave Would this be the Great Turkey Modification? And for pete's sake, I don't need you AND Vince going any faster..... Quote
davecarama Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 So an intake = 1 Does removing the headlamp lid = another 1? Does removing the turn signal lenses = 2 (1 for each) if I route the air to the intake? Or is the entire package 1 for intake modification?? Quote
davecarama Posted September 13, 2010 Author Posted September 13, 2010 Would this be the Great Turkey Modification? Was it a turkey or a deer... I thought it was a deer... Quote

Better search though It is my understanding of the rules that once you have taken a point(s) for something, you can do everything that is included with that mod for no extra points. In your case if you change the intake filter style/location, and remove lights for more airflow it is all just 1 point. Quote

Quote
MSP608 Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 13 is talking about modification of the piping that goes to the throttle body. Quote
Kubs Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 13 is talking about modification of the piping that goes to the throttle body. Correct. #13 is anything in front of the throttle body or improved airflow to the throttle body. #19 is changing the actual throttle body. Quote
